Well Brian of WA... You need to think a little further ahead.. If the crisis ends and oil comes down, what will our dependence on foreign oil then be (90%)... This is a WAR for our survival. This is another Pearl Harbor and if we do not respond by becoming ENERGY SELF SUFFICIENT, we will become a 2nd rate nation that sends $800 billion a year to countries that want to destroy us. This our chance and here are the facts. 1) AGGRESSIVE CONSERVATION is first and America is doing this thru buying more efficient vechicles, appliances etc. 2) Since we have vast deposits of energy offshore and Alaska, we should go all out to DRILL for those resources. This will carry us thru the period we need to develop alternative solar, wind, nuclear, nat gas and nuclear etc. New drilling technology can get sone of this energy to our home markets within 24 months, not 10 years. Note, if we had started drilling 10 years ago, all that energy would be here now. 3) Actively develop all other ALTERNATIVE sources. 4) JOBS< JOBS, JOBS..This domestic activity will immediately create AMERICAN JOBS which will help the economy. 5) The more energy efficent we become the more we can invest in CLEAN ENERGY. Without energy and subsequent jobs the environment will suffer more. 6) Make no mistake about it, we are at WAR because if we continue to be energy dependent on our enemies we will crumble within! WE CAN DO THIS IF WE PULL TOGETHER.

Has ANYONE considered the fact that DOMESTIC drilling will create hundreds of thousands of new jobs??? Who do you think would be drilling this oil? American companies, most likely using Americans. Who will be building the new drilling platforms? Making the steel? Building the ships? Americans. NOT someone on the other side of the world. T-Boone does have this one point correct, ANYTHING we do domestically will be good for Americans and the American dollar. Wind, solar, drilling for oil, nuclear, gas, refining, etc all make jobs. Lots of good paying jobs. There is big money in energy. Period.

One more thing. That oil in the ground is NOT the government's oil. That is OUR oil. The American people's oil. If WE WANT TO DRILL FOR IT, WE WILL DRILL FOR IT NO MATTER WHAT NANCY SAYS!!! No government has the right to stand in the way of the will of the people.

Brad of TX 5:46PM August 01, 2008

That is hogwash. This argument that it will take years for additional oil supplies to come online is a talking point to obfuscate the real issue. But look at how hypocritical the Dems are on this. You say that it will take years for additional oil supplies to come online. Well, when will renewable energies become available on en masse? That's right, it'll take much longer than it would to dig up more oil.

Do you honestly think that world demand is going to lower in response to higher prices (the high prices are telling us one thing - more oil supplies are needed. Oil is inelastic in demand, since it is so important to the world economy)? Are you honestly saying that we should stop buying oil, and thereby harm our economy even further, to lower price? Are you out of your mind? Yes, you are. You and other enviros are so keen out stopping us from drilling, as if it will have any effect on the Earth, or better yet, other nations, that the only people that are being hurt are other Americans.

And you guys call yourselves the party of the people. What a bunch of hogwash.

Chris of AZ 4:53PM August 01, 2008

Well, Chris, of AZ, while more oil supplies will reduce the price, let's not forget that going from a suspected oil source to actually selling it takes several years. By then the crisis might be over and prices might have gone down. More drilling is not a good response to temporary ups in prices, but a long-term measure.

On the other hand, there is something that could lower the price immediately, the other side of economics 101 - lower demand. Buying less oil would result in lower prices as well. This could potentially happen immediately, if people got behind it. Market meddling is a huge factor that is preventing this, as many countries openly subsidize gasoline and diesel (US subsidies are a little more subtle).

What did they spend on research and development? What did they spend on taxes to the government? What did they spend on employee salaries? What did they spend on exploration? What did they spend on dividends to shareholders? What did they spend on having to pay down debt? What did they spend on those leases that you liberal fools love to say that they are sitting on and not developing? What did they spend on taxes that had to be sent to foreign entities? What percentage of their profit is foreign and what percentage is domestic? It's nice to throw that Exxon made profits, but have you seen the price of oil lately? I can't believe people don't get this: you want to sock it to the oil companies? THEN LET THEM DRILL. More oil supplies on the market will reduce prices, thereby lowering profit margins.

Chris of AZ 10:43AM August 01, 2008

The 2008 election is not about drilling for oil, EXCEPT in the minds of those bubbas willing to let themselves be duped. The election is about health care philosophy, the relative decline of MOST Americans' net worth, and whether the future Supreme Court shall favor the non-person "entities" (corporations) over people or not.
