Tapping Condi Rice for VP Would Be a Game Changer for Mitt Romney
Tweet Share on Facebook July 20, 2012 Comment"Of course we don't want you Republicans to pick Condoleezza Rice as vice president," my female Democratic friend said to me. "Condi Rice is the Democrats' worst nightmare. We want Romney to put boring old Rob Portman on the ticket." I disagree with her that Ohio Sen. Rob Portman is boring, but let's leave that aside ... my friend is right about the fact that former Secretary of State Condi Rice is the Democrats' "worst nightmare."

Romney's NAACP Speech Shows Courage, Open Mind
Tweet Share on Facebook July 12, 2012 CommentOn Wednesday, Mitt Romney spoke to the NAACP convention in Houston. If you watch the entire video (full speech on video here) like I did, you'll see a gracious, respectful, thoughtful, and compelling speech that makes a great case for why African-American voters should vote for former Governor Romney. Romney didn't talk so much about voting against President Barack Obama; instead he outlined what he will do as president about high unemployment in the black community, how he'll work to improve failing schools in minority neighborhoods, and support policies that strengthen families, to name a few. "Support is asked for and earned, and that's why I'm here today," Romney said, "You have to make your case to every single voter."

5 Reasons the 'War on Women' Rhetoric Is a Lie
Tweet Share on Facebook July 6, 2012 CommentDemocrats may say that there's a Republican "war on women," but there's another side to the that story: These days, there are more opportunities for GOP women to take leadership roles in the party. It's a win-win: good for the women and good for the party, which needs their energy and expertise.

5 Reasons the Supreme Court’s Obamacare Ruling Helps the GOP
Tweet Share on Facebook June 29, 2012 CommentThe news is full of reports about President Obama's "victory" yesterday, a "yes-we-can moment" that was a "nearly complete validation" of his administration's signature piece of legislation. Politico is reporting that top White House advisers "seemed almost giddy at the prospect of congressional Republicans, incensed by the high court’s ruling, pursuing repeal efforts or other attacks on the law over the next weeks and months." But here are five reasons why the GOP should not hesitate to focus on the issue of healthcare reform going into the election.

Barack Obama's Economic Speech Flops
Tweet Share on Facebook June 15, 2012 CommentIts been another rough week for the president, on the heels of his "private sector is doing fine" fiasco last week. This week it was still more Hollywood fundraisers (last night's were at the New York home of Sarah Jessica Parker, and then at the Plaza), yet he's trailing Romney in the money department; this week's polls show Democrats have put blue-state Wisconsin in play with their failed recall vote; unemployment and consumer prices remain stubbornly high; and polls showing Americans believe that our nation remains on the "wrong track," and who disapprove of the president's handling of the economy, are stuck like a stalled car in a ditch.

Obama's Celebrity Strategy Only Shows How Out of Touch He Is
Tweet Share on Facebook June 8, 2012 CommentFor campaigns, celebrity endorsements can be a mixed bag. On the good side, they can help build the brand—if the celebrity is well known and loved, and his or her image dovetails with the campaign's outreach efforts to voters. In the business world, companies seek out celebrity endorsements for the same reasons, which is why we see tennis great Roger Federer as a celebrity spokesman for Rolex, and Mike Rowe, the Dirty Jobs guy, plugging Ford pick-up trucks, for example. They're good fits for those brands.

Planned Parenthood Pulls a Komen on Mitt Romney
Tweet Share on Facebook June 1, 2012 CommentIf you look at Planned Parenthood's most recent annual report, amid the number of sexually transmitted disease tests it performed (3.5 million), number of women for whom it provided contraception (2.2 million), and the number of "breast exams/breast care" procedures (747,000; no mention of mammograms), you'll find these two facts:

3 Reasons Why the Scott Walker Wisconsin Recall Election Matters
Tweet Share on Facebook May 25, 2012 CommentPolitical junkies are watching the June 5 recall election in Wisconsin very closely, but what about the rest of us? The subject of the recall campaign, Republican Gov. Scott Walker, is ahead in the polls and is looking like he'll survive. Democrats are now doing everything they can to convince voters that there's nothing here to see. But here are three good reasons why the recall election should matter to those of us who live outside of the Badger State:

Obama Catholic Contraception Fight Isn't Over As Church Sues
Tweet Share on Facebook May 21, 2012 CommentMonday the Catholic Church filed 12 different federal lawsuits against the administration on behalf of 43 Catholic dioceses and organizations ranging from local Catholic Charities to parish schools, hospitals, and colleges. The lawsuits are in response to last year's ruling by the Department of Health and Human Services, known as the HHS, which mandates all healthcare plans must provide sterilizations and abortion-inducing contraceptives for free, with an exemption for churches only, not broader religious organizations. Only churches which serve solely the members of the same faith are exempt; religious organizations which serve the general public are not covered—the most narrowly defined "conscience clause" ever adopted under federal law.

The Tea Party Didn't Beat Dick Lugar, He Beat Himself
Tweet Share on Facebook May 11, 2012 Comment (11)The press has its narrative about Sen. Richard Lugar losing the Republican primary in Indiana: It was a "conservative backlash inside the GOP" (Washington Post); the results "provide a new trophy for the Tea Party movement" (New York Times); "the Tea Party tossed another veteran Republican overboard Tuesday night" (Huffington Post); "a triumph for the Tea Party" (Los Angeles Times); you get the idea. Even Lugar himself seemed to be feeding the narrative, according to the Los Angeles Times:
