Republican Convention Showcased Mitt Romney's Character
Tweet Share on Facebook August 31, 2012 CommentIn his acceptance address Thursday night, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney came across as everything Barack Obama is not: humble, plain-spoken, and not interested in personal attacks. No American who watched Thursday night could possibly come away from Romney's speech believing that he is an "extremist," as the Obama campaign would have liked, and no one who heard the Oparowskis, who told of losing their son to cancer shortly after Mitt Romney helped the teenager write his will, could come away believing that Romney is "out of touch" with the struggles of everyday Americans. Every part of Romney's speech last night reinforced that he is a competent, genuine, decent, and compassionate man.

Ann Romney Wins Hearts, Chris Christie Wins Minds
Tweet Share on Facebook August 29, 2012 CommentSome people like to watch the Oscars, others like the Olympics. Maybe it's the speechwriter in me, but three nights of political oratory is my idea of a good time. Last night was great fun, from Senate candidate Ted Cruz giving a TED-style talk without a podium to former Rep. Artur Davis's barnburner to Gov. Chris Christie's keynote. Here's what Republicans accomplished last night:

Augusta, Republican Convention Smart to Invite Condoleezza Rice
Tweet Share on Facebook August 25, 2012 CommentWhat a couple of weeks for Condoleezza Rice: This week she was one first women to be offered membership at Augusta National golf course, and next week she'll be addressing the Republican National Convention in a primetime speaking slot Wednesday night. The Augusta National membership is just another "first" for her, after serving as our first female national security adviser, our first female African-American secretary of state, and the first female, first African-American, and youngest person ever named provost of Stanford University. She was once called "the most prominent amateur musician in the world," for her talent as a concert pianist. Her father was the grandson of slaves and she wrote about her four girlfriends from Birmingham who were killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in her book, Extraordinary, Ordinary Lives. What an extraordinary, ordinary life she's had.

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan Can Win the Whiteboard Generation
Tweet Share on Facebook August 17, 2012 CommentGood news. The Boston Globe is reporting that presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney and his VP pick Rep. Paul Ryan will be making an unexpected joint appearance on Monday at a town hall meeting New Hampshire. It's welcome news because both Romney and Ryan campaign better when they are together, and the big crowds and through-the-roof donations they attracted last weekend are proof of that. If the Romney campaign were smart, they'd schedule a lot more of these impromptu joint appearances as the week heading into the convention unfolds.

10 Reasons Paul Ryan Should Be Mitt Romney's VP Pick
Tweet Share on Facebook August 10, 2012 CommentSome say a Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan ticket would bring about an electoral disaster for Republicans—guaranteeing a return of the "throwing Grandma off a cliff" type of attacks we've seen from the left on Medicare reform—I've got my fingers crossed for Romney to go with House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan as his running mate. Here's why:

Scott Brown Is Gaining Momentum Against Elizabeth Warren
Tweet Share on Facebook August 7, 2012 CommentYour faithful blogger is just back from a week-long college tour in New England, where I had a front row seat to the Massachusetts Senate race. Elizabeth Warren's campaign, which has outraised Sen. Scott Brown's campaign $24 million to $12 million since last July, is spending its money on advertising saturating the New England market. (The Boston Herald is reporting that the majority of Warren's money is from out of state; two thirds of Brown donors are in state.) She's got a let's-get-people-back-to-work ad that is running around the clock, pretty much alternating with that very negative President Obama ad that features former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney singing the national anthem.
