While I agree that Washington, DC needs some new voices in leadership, I respect the preparation and political process that keeps those in power. Remember Barry and other leaders were elected. They, the incumbents of Ward 3,4,7,8, called on a political base of voters that resonated with their message. This political base supported their victory again.

What I saw in this primary from the new voices [too many who ran against political machines], a failed process in building a political base, no real grassroots thrust, and lack of name recognition. Except Kevin Chavous bearing the name of his father who was ousted by the well organized system in Ward 7.

The other thing I saw was the lack of coalition politics. Did those seeking office choose the best possible candidate to run? Or did everyone throw their "my right to run" hat into the ring? This insured that incumbency would win. It happens every time.

Like you I grew up in DC. My family participated in the establishment of Home Rule and the election of the "old guard." When I was young we did a lot of things that the "new voices" don't consider in their campaign structures. The stuff that gets people elected or dethrone incumbency.
