Instead of Spain, Michelle Obama Should Stick to U.S. Vacations
Tweet Share on Facebook August 9, 2010 Comment (58)There’s a lot of talk about Michelle and Sasha Obama’s mother-daughter trip with 40 friends to a ritzy resort on the coast of Spain, and some of the commentary is a little harsh. Andrea Tantaros of the New York Daily News calls the first lady a “material girl” and a “modern-day Marie Antoinette”--but she also brings up a valid point about the cost to taxpayers of taking an estimated 70 Secret Service agents and Air Force Two on an overseas vacation. Ruth Marcus in the Washington Post writes that the attacks are unfair and that it’s not reasonable to expect the first family to have a “stay-cation” in Washington, cleaning out closets at the White House.

Obama, Give Cardinals Great Stan Musial the Medal of Freedom
Tweet Share on Facebook August 6, 2010 Comment (2)It’s a hot Friday in August here in Washington, and what little news there is is just depressing. The latest jobs numbers show a stalled recovery and unemployment stuck at 9.5 percent. Politico is reporting that things in the Senate are “getting a little weird.” (That’s breaking news? We’ve all known that for a while.) Peggy Noonan writes that the nation is in trouble and that the “American Dream needs a boost.” And if I have to see one more promo for Jersey Shore I think I’ll get sick. No wonder most Americans think our country is on the wrong track.

Not the Real Housewives of D.C.
Tweet Share on Facebook August 5, 2010 Comment (4)I had a great time yesterday on National Public Radio, part of a panel of women on Tell Me More during their Beauty Shop segment, which is a sisterly alternative to their all-male weekly Barber Shop in which guys talk about pop culture as if they were sitting around the shop. Author Amy Alexander, blogger Pamela Merritt, Tell Me More host Michel Martin, and I talked about a serious subject, which was Shirley Sherrod and the NAACP--here’s my blog about it when the story broke and Amy’s blog about her experiences with the NAACP--but we also had a less-than-serious discussion about the debut this week of the trashy show The Real Housewives of D.C.

Kagan Confirmation Lacks Drama But Will Have Huge Effects
Tweet Share on Facebook August 5, 2010 CommentThe Wall Street Journal is reporting that with Senate floor debate already begun, Elena Kagan’s nomination to the Supreme Court will take place no later than Friday of this week. But as one Senate aide told Politico, “no one really cares about Kagan,” and the website called the nomination a “low-drama process well-suited to a hot Washington summer.”

Why Paul Ryan Makes Democrats Nervous
Tweet Share on Facebook August 3, 2010 Comment (12)Anne Applebaum writes in Slate about the “amnesia” among Republicans regarding their past history of running up deficits--she realizes that the Obama administration has done far worse, but because the GOP is the party of small government, she thinks it has more to answer for than Democrats do:
