Virginia AG Ken Cuccinelli's Ruling Makes Abortions Safer

Having an abortion at 12 weeks at a "safer" hospital 150 miles away is riskier than having an abortion at 10 weeks at a "less safe" local clinic.

U.S. News regularly works itself into a lather over burdensome, unnecessary government regulation. Yet today, MKC has vaulted the fence to take the other side of the argument.

Mr. Cuccinelli doesn't give a hoot about the health of women. He couldn't get his radical agenda through the legislature, so he's trying to implement it by fiat.

There is nothing that gladdens the Republican heart like finding someone in a tough position, like a teenage girl impregnated by her uncle, and giving her a good, swift kick in the head.

Thanks for nothing, Mary Kate. Nobody's buying.

What MKC willfully ignores is the rationale for the new regulations. Were they issued in response to any real measurable safety concerns or quantifiable safety targets for such procedures? It appears not. Were the previous regulations, exempting first-trimester abortions from hospital safety standards, reviewed with respect to safety statistics? It appears not. Thus, this action in Va. appears to be directed towards a problem that does not exist. The regulations do not make abortions less dangerous, because the present system has been working at a perfectly safe level. The argument is a straw-man tactic and blatantly insincere. It represents the worst possible kind of leadership in a democratic society, misleading the public to promote a particular radical ideology that is clearly a minority view and also clearly motivated by irrational religious fervor, and not science.

That hospitals are "safer" than clinics does not mean clinics are unsafe. Logic 101, a class never taken by this author.
