Why Pelosi, Democrats Are Wrong on Unemployment Extension

They are all out of touch with reality. I say vote them all out. Our political system sucks. They spend so much time out on recess and then when they return they're only focusing on how to keep their party in. They're playing games as usual. Get rid of them all. I would like to challenge Pelosi to send out 500 dummy resume's in Las Vegas Nevada (with an administrative background)for any and every job available. Let's see how many interviews you get idiot!

Mary,

you simple need to study the CBO's Debt in relation to GDP analysis and you will see what a disaster Regan was to the economy and how his policies directly correlate to the financial situation this country is in right now!

Extending unemployment benefits causes unemployment?

Businesses aren't hiring because of uncertainty about the deficit?

So businesses will hire people when the deficit/debt is reduced?

I thought the more money we had in our hot little hands, the better our economy would be....isn't that what the trickle down theory is? Didn't george W tell us to go spend money after 9-11? didn't he do the first bailouts?

I thought Henry Ford paid a higher wage, so his employees could spend their money on his cars? Money spent has the same effect on the economy regardless of whether it was earned as income or received as a handout. Profit doesn't distinguish between a dime from Wall street or a dime from Obama street. money is money is money and spent money is good for the folks who sell and make things we want/need to buy.

so what is the big deal? the big deal is that Republicans only care about winning in 2010, 2012 etc. and everything is political and fair game....real people and their lives don't matter in this equation.

Ms do you ever stop and think "what good are millions of small busines if there is no one to buy things if no one has money to buy and sell?" It would be like owning a bra with one cup. Call me crazy but this has to be done both ways. Unemployment and creating small businesses. The wars are old and need to end. Almost ten years. No bin laden.

but Mark Zandi of Moody's Economics (former adviser to the McCain campaign) argues that UI has a multiplier in the range of 1.7, among the highest of all the various spending/tax cut alternatives....but unlike Mary Kate and Glenn Beck, he isn't "divinely inspired"..he has a PhD from some secular diploma mill....

'First, it just doesn’t pass the smell test with me that unemployment benefits create more jobs than “almost any other initiative you can name.”'

Of course not, because that is not what Pelosi said. She said "creates jobs faster than ..." not "create more jobs than ...". Those two statements are not even close to the same meaning. I'm thinking perhaps you are a student of Emily Litella?

Time to say "Never mind ...".

So after my angry rant below- I realized- there may be a compromise or a compromise might be able to be reached-

Here's my thoughts:

1) Unemployment benefits/extensions MUST be restored.

- Democrats concede & allow 6 months of Unemployment extension benefits out of Stimulus fund

- Recommend taking note of impact of which programs need to be cut for this change in Stimulus fund budget.

2) All of congress begins working on the next 6 month plan to resolve the high unemployment.

- Possible suggestions:

a) Set up a governmental organization for assisting/retraining the long-term unemployed. -Immediate job generation for govt workers, social workers & counselors to deal with combating depression that goes along with long-term unemployment. Also, likely need a program to assist in changing attitudes towards learning & restarting careers as many of the unemployed are likely more mature & possibly fairly well-educated, but many of the jobs have been outsourced by businesses to countries with lower cost labor.

b) setup government organizations for unemployed on extension plans to do volunteer work that benefits their local area. - give the unemployed something to do in order to 'earn their benefits'.- incorporate into the volunteer program job-search time, tools (computers & job-listings at a location with a career counselor(s) for guidance) & skills retraining if/when needed

c)Different perspective than making unemployed useful to the country- but investigate ways to provide 'targetted business plans for growth' per regions of the country impacted most heavily by unemployment.

I would think the targetted business plan per region or maybe even on a city by city basis would need a team of business & economic advisors to analyze the region or city & identify business stimulus package proposal plans that would fit the majority of the local labor force's skillset or skillsets...

just some thoughts on this problem our country faces....

Basically- I want a true solution to the problems rather than all the insane & incessant politicking that I've observed since 2008. Make it happen already.

Ruined my Sunday morning reading this internet article & comments. Was looking for some sound advice on the state of the unemployment extension.

The wording used in the article is biased to the republican message or political standpoint:

example 1: the link under Pelosi's comments(democrat view) is stated:

"See who donates the most to Pelosi"

-negative connotation in wording

example 2: the link under Camp's paraphasing(republican view) is stated:

"See who supports Camp"

-positive connotation in wording.

The article would have 'appeared' more balanced if the same wording per each link were used. It's a commentary- so bias or opinion is allowed. But for someone who is affected by having to support an unemployed relative directly & who works with a mother of 2 that is working 2 8hour per day jobs & still not meeting their monthly budget due to her husband has been out of work extensively, the comment writers & the author of this article need to experience unemployment & minimum wage jobs themselves to understand reality for a large portion of the US population. I'm absolutely disgusted. The politicians & the news writers likely get a big ego boost or some sort of euphoric feeling of accomplishment by playing these political games and do not understand the state of the ordinary US citizen today.

As the 'normal joe-shmoe' of America working a tech job in CA- thankfully still earning just at 6 figures, I'm able to barely maintain making my monthly budget & assist my relative through this economic crisis. But even tho I'm making 102,000 per year - making a mortgage payment - I'm also working a minimum wage job on Sat & Sun just to be able put $600 per month into savings to try to get prepared in case I lose my job.

The damn unemployment extensions should NEVER have been allowed to be terminated by our governmental reps. This is a huge failure on their part & if it were a public-sector business, each & every one of these politicians would be fired. As someone who actually believes our current POTUS provides leadership that has been missing since Ronald Reagan, I would prefer that the Democrats graciously concede this frivolous politicking to get the unemployment benefits restored out of the stimulus fund. Albeit those same democrats & all the damn news networks had better clearly outline exactly WHICH jobs stimulus programs have been cut & the impact. THEN WE CAN HOPEFULLY OBJECTIVELY IDENTIFY WHICH POLITICAL PARTY IS BEING THE TRUE FOOL FOR THE US ECONOMY.

The bottomline viewpoint from 'middle-America' is that there are citizens & families in our country who have likely been unable to eat this past week.

Unrepentant 2 Time Scrub Voter sez:

"He will be soundly thrashed in 2012, even more dramatically than the former holder of that title did in 1980."

Could you provide us...say..half a dozen metrics by which we can compare the three candidates for the title "worst POTUS ever"?

Edmund Black of NH 8:02AM July 08, 2010

"Contempt for Obama is in inverse proportion to remorse for casting two votes for the worst POTUS ever..... "

That would be impossible. The worst POTUS ever hasn't run in two presidential elections--yet. He will be soundly thrashed in 2012, even more dramatically than the former holder of that title did in 1980. That is, if he doesn't get impeached first.
