What the he-- are you talking about? Please point out how you would do what you suggest. Are you talking a fair tax? that would work may-be.What do you have in mind? The current system won't and taxing the "rich" won't either.

We can pay the national debt, eliminate the income tax and still provide all the money we need for federal, state and local government programs withing five years.

I know that it's fashionable to state that a large number of US residents don't pay income taxes (47%, I believe), but with few exceptions (the elderly poor) these folks still have to file. So they're faced with the same confusing and costly problem that the rest of us are.

There's a simple solution:make Congress do their own income taxes! At least those on the committees responsible for our tax code. Lock them in a windowless room for a sunny spring weekend, and let them have at it. Have their return evlauated by an IRS panel of experts, and make the results know publicly. Maybe Mr. Geitner could give them some pointers ;) If this were done, you can bet your refund that our tax code wold be simplified!

If you can't do your own taxes, your life is probably way too complicated, or you keep lousy records. The tax code is so complicated because legislators use it to encourage various social policies and behaviors, rather than simply raising revenue. There's nothing that says you have to take all those deductions, you know. If all else fails, pay a preparer one year, and in subsequent years read the instructions to make sure the rules haven't changed and copy their previous work.

My life is pretty messy from a tax code point of view, but I did my state and federal returns in about two hours back in January. E-filing is a snap!

If your dental visit entails a "high level of pain" you're seeing the wrong dentist.
