Unbelievable, but I think I agree with RL Schafer. It's a little hard to be sure, because of his dead end tangents and circular communication style. If I get his point, the first paragraph and the last are sufficient. It didn't work in Vietnam. Let's save our resources and come back home. I was disappointed in President Obama's decision in this matter. I know he took the time to process all the information and choose what he thought was the best course. And, I know that he is taking advise from the real experts in the field - the best our military has to offer. However, I do not think it is in our best interest to continue to throw money and lives at this morass, as RLS has suggested. I can't imagine this working out well.

IT SEEMS...

that Viet Nam has taught us nothing. The people of a nation have to want freedom and liberty. If they are steeped in an enduring, overpowering ideology; religious, cultural or political, there is little hope of transforming their nature by force. Ultimately, lasting change must come from within themselves.

The only exception might be in the case of total war - stamping out all vestiges of of whatever ideals and philosophy they adhere to, and replacing them with values held by the conqueror. I note that while Western Civilization has lost the will for total war - Islam has not.

Total war and subsequent "nation building" worked well in Japan, Italy and Germany after WWII. However, I note that in those cases the overturned systems were rather short lived aberrations - such is not the case in Afghanistan.

If we could see a hundred years in the future perhaps we would see Europe, all of Africa, the Middle and Near East enveloped in Islam. Russia and China either co-existing or engaged in perpetual warfare, and the New World generally united in their mutual defense.

Now may be the time to start shrinking our realm to an affordable, sustainable and defensible perimeter.
