Your Questions About the 'Shriver Report' on Women in the Economy

I wrote yesterday about the fact that women are now driving the global economy, controlling more of it than the economies of China and India combined. This coincides with the news today that for the first time in America, women make up half of all U.S. workers. In addition, according to the just-released Shriver Report titled "A Woman's Nation," mothers are now the primary breadwinners or co-breadwinners in nearly two thirds of American families.

Here is today's question for my readers: I'll be participating in a conference call for bloggers on Monday morning with the author, Maria Shriver, and John Podesta of the Center for American Progress, and I'd love to have your suggestions for questions to ask them. I've got a few ideas of my own, but I'd love to hear from you.

If you click on the link above, you can take a look at the executive summary. It seems to me (I'll be reading the full report over the weekend) that they do a pretty exhaustive job of detailing all the changes in American society since the late 1960s, but at the end of the executive summary they state that their report is only a first step. The second step is to decide what to do about it:

We as a people must transform the way our government, our businesses, our faith-based institutions, and our media deal with the realities of a woman's nation so that all of us can better cope with the transformation of how we work and live.

What do you think? Do you think we should transform the way our government, businesses, churches, and media work because women are now half of the workforce? If so, how? What changes would you make if you were in charge? Let me know what you think.

Hi..I attended the conference and it was the most amazing experience I've had in a very long time. However, It struck me during the conversations that went on, that our Senior CItizen's were never part of the conversation.

My Dad died several months ago because he had nobody to call when he was in distress even though he lived in an assisted living facility on Long Island (ATRIA)...

If he had a "buddy" or someone to call, he may still be alive today. He lived in the independent wing, and they wouldn't offer any assistance, and I was 3000 miles away in California. I tried desperately to find someone to go to his facility to see if he needed any help....Sadly, it was to late, and he died 3 weeks later after being rushed to the hospital.

He wasn't a feeble old man, and still drove, and cared for his wife who was living close by in a nursing home with Alzheimers.

Maybe we could do something to help the seniors like we do for the children...
