Hardly anyone understands proper grammar anymore. They barely teach it in school, and soon no one will take it seriously.

I grew up in Washington, DC attending both private and public schools before successfully completing studies at the George Washington University. I, quite often, posted copies of the Washington Posts Op-Ed with marks indicating the improper use of grammar. I even had a reporter friend of mine suggest that it is more important to get the story across than use proper grammar. I retorted that one can achieve both and that the news agencies have the DUTY to use proper grammar, as they indirectly "educate" the populace! If these "educators" used better grammar, we would probably hear better use of the language!

Sadly, most news organizations condone improper grammar by continuing to employ newscasters who make the mistakes listed below.

They often drop the ing when speaking. For example, they say things like "The Senator was goin" to do something instead of going to do something.

They frequently say a child has "gone missing" instead of the more proper the child is missing.

Ending sentences with a preposition is a frequent occurrence.

They misuse the word real by saying things like "The weather is real bad today".

Broadcasters are permitted to misuse the word done too. For example the will say "my job is done here" instead of saying "my job is completed". My grandmother said "cakes are done and people are finished".

These are just a few of the multitude of errors allowed by broadcasters. Additionally, schools no longer require proper grammar in order for an assignment to receive a passing grade. Tragically most Americans truly no longer care about being literate.
