Hollywood and Plastic Surgery
Tweet Share on Facebook January 21, 2010 Comment (3)Hollywood sends a terrible message to young people with the way it celebrates plastic surgery and rail thin models ["Did Heidi Montag's Plastic Surgery Go Too Far?" usnews.com]. It's sad to watch a seemingly normal girl like Heidi turn into a superficial, appearance-obsessed Hollywood type. I never really understood plastic surgery anyway because it is so obvious when someone gets it done. Everyone knows that's not really what you look like. What's the point? Our flaws are what make us beautiful and unique.

Martha Coakley's Loss
Tweet Share on Facebook January 20, 2010 CommentThe [Massachusetts Senate] election was about a lot of things: yes, healthcare, yes, the ramrod agenda of Obama, and yes, the fact that Martha Coakley doesn't know who Curt Schilling is.

Assessing Airport Security
Tweet Share on Facebook January 20, 2010 Comment (1)I am not convinced that the additional measures implemented are useful [What Airport Security Costs You, usnews.com]. For example, I find it hard to believe that running one's shoes through an X-ray machine does anything for security. First, it is my understanding that explosives will not be detected by X-rays. Second, how much explosive can be hidden in a shoe? Hardly enough to cause fatal structural damage to an airplane, I would have thought. And if it works, why is the U.S. the only country enforcing such a rule? The U.K. certainly does not, from my experience.

The Devil and Pat Robertson
Tweet Share on Facebook January 19, 2010 Comment (1)The Devil and Pat Robertson both play a pretty good con game, but Pat tops the points this week using the Haitian tragedy to try to raise money.

Living on Less
Tweet Share on Facebook January 19, 2010 Comment (2)[Catherine Goerz ] has some great ideas for surviving with class amid this terrible recession. But I do agree that we have [awakened] in the middle of an overindulgence dream [How to Live Happily on 75 Percent Less, usnews.com]. The dream of having everything we wanted, when we wanted, simply by paying with credit...I believe this phenomenon is over. The dream is replaced with the nightmare of overspending, self-entitlement, and lack of forethought resulting in a major lifestyle hangover. Living simply and close to one's true core values is the answer. These stores and corporations are also going to go through changes. Change is hard to do, especially when you would rather have everything like it was, but what was can never be again! The banks, credit card companies, and this new elite will soon see what their fortune was based on—our overindulgences. It's time to tighten up our belts, tighten up our wallets, and lose a few pounds. Literally!

Professor’s Rules and Roles
Tweet Share on Facebook January 15, 2010 Comment (3)I had [a boring professor] and fortunately I did not run for the hills [10 Warning Signs of a Bad Professor, usnews.com]. Sure, it took some work to listen, to read the texts, and to study, but I learned. About 10 weeks into a 16-week semester, the professor arrived for class and overheard a number of us talking about gun control and the Second Amendment. The professor proceeded to spend the entire class session telling us about the first and only time he carried a weapon. It was during his escape from communist Bulgaria, and the tale was absolutely fascinating. His narrative has stayed in my memory for all these years.

Wanted: Young Political Commentators
Tweet Share on Facebook January 15, 2010 Comment (3)I'm 23 and I never watch these [political] shows because everyone on them is so old... If somebody under the age of 30 hosted, I'd set my DVR to see them ask the questions I'd want to ask.

Limbaugh and Helping Haiti
Tweet Share on Facebook January 14, 2010 Comment (39)Rush Limbaugh should be ashamed to call himself a Christian, an American, and a human being ["Rush Limbaugh: No More Aid for Haiti," usnews.com]. Such insensitive comments, with no regard for the millions of men, women, and children who are now suffering or dead as a result of this horrible earthquake. He should be banned from the airwaves, and have his radio show cancelled. There is no room in America for his racist, hurtful comments, and his treasonous remarks toward President Obama. As Americans, we have the right to petition to have him removed from the airwaves, and this should be done as soon as possible.

Sarah Palin at Fox News
Tweet Share on Facebook January 13, 2010 Comment (31)Prediction—Sarah Palin will not air on Fox and/or will air and fail ["Fox Runs a Risk in Hiring Sarah Palin," usnews.com]. Her history is that she avoids taking time to learn and study, she has no interest in reading, and she lacks the initiative to "prepare." It would also help if she spoke in complete sentences (you know, using nouns, verbs, adjectives, all in the proper place with a period at the end). Palin is certainly suited for the entertainment arena ... her history in the political field is dismal. Fox would be better off with Conan O'Brien.
