Stock Market Vs. Job Market
Tweet Share on Facebook October 23, 2009 Comment (3)How a company is perceived and presented to Wall Street drives all of this ["Why Stocks Are Surging as Jobs Disappear," usnews.com]. The stockholders demand earnings and only by eliminating the No. 1 cost (people) can this be achieved in down times. Corporate double talkers who preach employees first, HR programs to benefit employees, etc. do so only in good times. When business drops, they drop those same employees like a hot potato. Or...worse...send those jobs overseas for pennies and those jobs are lost forever. There is no turning back. This has happened under any presidency over the past 20 plus years...so it's not a party issue; it's a stock price issue.

Examining Mainstream Media Bias
Tweet Share on Facebook October 22, 2009 Comment (3)Since when does having a majority in congress mean the minority should follow blindly along with the majority's wishes ["Obama's War on Limbaugh and Fox Will Backfire With Voters," usnews.com]? Seems to me Fox and others are simply giving the other side of the story. I think all those CNN and MSNBC viewers are confused. Fair and balanced doesn't necessarily mean both sides of an issue will be heard, but rather it's the other half of the story that the liberal media is not talking about. Does Fox go over the top sometimes—sure. Do [MSNBC's] Olbermann and Matthews let their personal opinions seep into the broadcast—you bet they do!

The White House Should Be Able to Defend Itself Against Fox
Tweet Share on Facebook October 21, 2009 Comment (3)The White House has the same freedom of speech as the rest of us, so any attack or defensiveness is within its rights and has plenty of historical precedent.

Loan Modification and Fighting Foreclosure
Tweet Share on Facebook October 21, 2009 Comment (5)I recently went through nine months of trying to get my loan modified ["Why Obama's Housing Rescue Hasn't Prevented Record Foreclosures," usnews.com]. All I asked for was a reduction in the interest rate. Then, after approving the modification, Wells Fargo decided not to give it to me after all! I'm still waiting on the letter that is supposed to tell me why. The modification department personnel didn't even have the decency to call me back after I left several messages over the course of a month. Wouldn't it make more sense to keep me in my home (I have a good job) by just reducing the interest rate than to take my home and sell it for one third of what I purchased it for?

No Cost-of-Living Adjustment
Tweet Share on Facebook October 20, 2009 Comment (4)So often our discussions seem to leave out reason and fairness ["Social Security Makes the Call: No 2010 COLA," usnews.com]. Let me assure you I have concerns for the elderly. As a pastor I visit them and hear of their trials on a regular basis. However, this fussing over no cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for this year is unreasonable. If there was no inflation then there should be no COLA. But you say," their expenses did go up in certain areas that affect them directly." This is true. They paid more for healthcare, drugs, and food. But remember that in years past they received increases based on the same formula. Many of the elements (involved in inflation) that increased their benefits in times past were areas that did not affect them. In the overall picture, it is fair.

Press, Like Religion, Should Be Off Limits to Government Support
Tweet Share on Facebook October 20, 2009 Comment (1)The First Amendment is there for a reason: There should no more be government support for press entities than there should be for religious entities.

Combating the Obesity Epidemic
Tweet Share on Facebook October 19, 2009 Comment (2)I agree with this article in that this so-called obesity epidemic has nothing to do with willpower but everything to do with our food supply ["The Obesity Epidemic Isn't Just About Willpower," usnews.com]. Specifically—the American food supply and American style of eating over the last 30 years or so. These huge food corporations are including ingredients in our food (high fructose corn syrup, MSG, transfats) that are directly responsible. How does 66 percent of the population become overweight or obese? If it was just "willpower" involved, maybe 10 percent to 15 percent of people would be affected. Notice that when once previously healthy immigrants come to this country and start eating "American style," they become obese. Also a factor in the spread of obesity worldwide is the export of "American style" eating and foods. I would like to see all junk food—chips, cookies, sodas, candy, and so forth taxed. This is not a sin tax; it's a means of getting money to deal with the health problems caused by this toxic food. The purpose is to have the products causing all the problems contribute to the solution. We do it with cigarettes, why not with our toxic so-called food?

Jump-Starting the Job Market
Tweet Share on Facebook October 16, 2009 Comment (4)If Obama wants to create jobs then he has to start chipping away at the uncertainty his administration has created ["Patience Wearing Thin as Obama Turns to Jobs," usnews.com]. Businesses accelerated the unemployment rate when it looked like Obama was going to win the election because of the fear of tax increases, more regulation, and higher health cost burdens. Sure enough, every single one of these fears has come to light. As a result the only profits over the past year have been gained by squeezing efficiency and lowering overhead by firing hard-working Americans. In order to get businesses to hire, Obama has to more clearly articulate his tax, pollution (carbon credit), and health costs over the next 3 to 7 years. Otherwise, businesses and consumers will continue to sideline any future spending plans.

A Soda Tax Could Encourage Americans to Be Healthier
Tweet Share on Facebook October 16, 2009 Comment (4)No one will be telling you what you can drink. You will just have to pay a price—physically, your body already does when you consume unhealthy/sugary products.
