Realities of "The Biggest Loser"

As a Registered Dietitian, I help people make healthy changes every day. The key to lifelong weight loss is to address 4 important components: nutrition, exercise, stress management, and sleep. The Biggest Loser has obviously changed lives, but we must remember that our daily lives allow only so much time to devote to fitness and diet. Think about it, you didn't gain the weight overnight, so it's only common sense to know that it will take time to lose that weight. When we make healthier choices on a daily basis, we improve our quality of life and the weight will naturally come off! In my book, "How To Eat Fried Chicken and Be Thin Too" I address how to incorporate all components into your set lifestyle. What is more important than the massive exercies on the show, is to learn how to eat healthy, portion sizing, and eating the right amount from each food group. They need to be taught how to ready the food labels and what to look for. This knowledge is power. They may lose a bunch of weight on the show, but when they get back to their normal lives, they will slow down. Losing 2 - 3 pound per week adds up fast and they will be more apt to keep the weight off.

This summer, I learned about a British show called "You are What You Eat". From what I've seen, it seems to be a more realistic approach. Instead of focusing so much on weight loss, the host takes in two people at a time to teach healthier lifestyles. Then, after each participant goes home, the show's host does a surprise visit to find out how well they've kept up the healthier program.

Do people watch the entire show or just parts of the show???? They are always telling the folks there that it is different on campus as opposed to off campus, that is why Bob takes his group to Subway and shows them how to order or the show teases the winners with nights at a hotel to show they go crazy when off campus. Also as far as working out like they do on your own, that is just not healthy. These folks have a trainer with them, and there is a medical staff standing by just off camera. And dont say the viewer does not know that because everytime someone has been hurt there is a medical person right on top of them on camera. Obese people does not equal stupid people, just means people make wrong choices. Smokers are warned of cancer but choose to smoke, obese people know more calories in than out equals a big butt. So if anything the show just shows what can be done if you make and effort, the only thing it does not show is how much effort it takes and the pain it takes to reach the goal. Just remember nothing comes free in life, if losing weight was easy we would all have six pack abs?????
