Debating Universal Healthcare
Tweet Share on Facebook March 11, 2009 Comment (24)Truthfully, I'm not sure I'm ready for universal care given that the government just doesn't do much of anything very well ["Experts Predict an Intense Battle Over Obama's Healthcare Reform," usnews.com]. But if we want to compare our healthcare systems, we just have to look at the results. Our life expectancy and infant mortality are not as high as most other industrialized countries that have universal care. There are a lot of factors that go into this like our multi-ethnic makeup, poverty, etc. But 40 million without care is not acceptable. I would prefer a more gradual approach like tax credits to cover premium costs and more competition so that small business can pool together to get competitively-priced health insurance.

Obama Correct on Stem Cell, But Also Political
Tweet Share on Facebook March 10, 2009 Comment (2)I favor Obama's move on stem cell research, but to say he is putting science above politics rings hollow; politics is still driving the train, just in a different direction now.

Coulter Clash and Limbaugh Too
Tweet Share on Facebook March 10, 2009 Comment (21)When are people going to get it? Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh are comedians, not journalists ["First Rush, Now Coulter Called Offensive," usnews.com]. They foment controversy to get ratings and keep up their shtick. You can tell that the wealthy, sophisticated Limbaugh has contempt for the idiots who call him. The same goes for Coulter who pals around with her Westside friends in L.A. Come on...it's an act!
Comment by Doug of CA
I happen to be a young college student who loves Ann Coulter. I think that it is time for America to be told the truth and to stop worrying about being so "politically correct." I hate to break it to you Meghan but if you don't like everything about either party than there is already a party for that—it's called Independents!!! Quit trying to get back in the lime light and sound so shocking. There are actually people who want to return to God and stick to the conservative values, so quit trying to change the party... like I said, become a moderate.

Newt Gingrich as a Presidential Candidate
Tweet Share on Facebook March 9, 2009 Comment (1)Newt is a good analyst of how the Republicans went astray. Most of them are clueless and incapable of thinking outside the box. Personally, I think the party has to go all the way back to Eisenhower as a model.

Rush Limbaugh, the Press and the Sinking Stock Market
Tweet Share on Facebook March 9, 2009 Comment (105)Outrageous Rush and the Press
Limbaugh's entertainment value is unparalleled, and we should all appreciate him for that—preferably from afar [10 Things You Didn't Know About Rush Limbaugh, usnews.com]. Michael Steele was wrong to revise his comment that the big guy is just a personality and not a spokesperson for the Republican Party. Limbaugh has to say outrageous things because his shrinking listener base counts on that to re-enforce their prehistoric views of American life. If he didn't say totally outlandish things, Limbaugh wouldn't get any press. I will continue to listen to him as little as possible. I don't need to spend my valuable time listening to bigotry and personal attacks. He does nothing to make this a better country and plenty to degrade it. It's a sad commentary on all of us that he has any following at all.

Housing Bailout Hostility
Tweet Share on Facebook March 6, 2009 Comment (5)It sounds so easy, but what happens when people are given reduced payments, balances brought into line with current values, and values go back up [I Pay My Mortgage: What's in the Housing Bailout For Me? usnews.com]? Does that mean they will have a tax liability based on the amount they were forgiven? I am riding it out but when values go back up, the people who had principles reduced will basically be riding on a windfall. A thousand dollar bonus, if you keep current on your mortgage. Wow! People who have done the right thing, not gone crazy borrowing against high equity, are now being penalized for proper behavior. When are we all going to realize you cannot borrow your way out of debt!
Comment by El Kingston of CA
Who cares if the house next door goes into foreclosure! The first question you need to ask yourself is why did you buy the home in the first place? I didn't buy my home to sell it; we didn't buy it get an equity loan; we bought it to live in it. So at the end of the day it really doesn't matter what it's worth. I'm not moving and don't care. No taxpayer should pay someone for their neighbor's mortgage, medical, dental, or any other darn bill. Pay your own bills, worry about your own mortgage, and live within your means. No one should bail out anyone.

The Bush Administration: Gone But Not Forgotten?
Tweet Share on Facebook March 6, 2009 Comment (12)It amazes me that we can spend months, and endless tax dollars on an investigation of a sex act, but don't want to give crimes of the government any time or money ["Why Sen. Patrick Leahy Wants a 'Truth Commission'," usnews.com]. Why have other branches of government if there is no oversight? How do we talk about "no torture" without prosecuting the commanders of torture? How do we lose billions in a war that we were lied to about, without an investigation? We would spend more time and money on someone that robbed a convenience store than on someone who lied, cheated, and lost the lives of our countrymen willingly? The people who ignore these injustices are just as bad as the people who commit the crimes and should not represent the people of this country!

President Bush took extraordinary steps to protect us. Nothing he did was about himself, increasing his power, Republican power or any other nefarious reason. Everything now is about increasing Democratic power and Obama's power. They want to control every aspect of society. I was never scared during the Bush presidency. I am scared to death now. Checking my E-mail and phone calls to foreign countries was never a concern. It will be interesting to see what Obama does with those terrorists being held in Cuba.

School Boundary Battles
Tweet Share on Facebook March 5, 2009 CommentI have to side with the parents who went to the effort to transport their children to the better school district ["Schools Crack Down on Boundary Hopping," usnews.com]. Our school district is better than some surrounding school districts, and we take all comers since we have mostly retirees and our enrollment numbers are low. Public libraries are funded by local tax dollars yet they are open to everyone. My kids went to programs in the library in the next county over because it was so well funded and had great programs. No one kicked them out, and I volunteered of my own volition to help offset the costs. MIT puts its courses online so students around the world without the funds can learn. These laws are headed in the wrong direction. We want poor people with motivation to show up to the better schools. There should be some compromise positions taken. One is that the excellent schools in rich areas should offer some spaces to poor students outside of the district who have excellent academic records and a desire to succeed. Also, the money per pupil in the poor school district could be transferred to the rich district. Parents could pay part or all of the difference in educational cost or parents could volunteer in the school and work off the expenses. In the long run, America benefits by not keeping people down, and we need to find a way to accommodate these students.
