It is no coincidence that the 2012 Republican frontrunners are the same governors who oppose the stimulus plan. Palin et. al are certainly acting with their future ambitions in mind. Abandoning the Republican hardliners at this point would be political suicide for anyone hoping for a nomination in three years.

Sarah Palin's actions are quite consistent with her own conservative fiscal policy in managing the budget of Alaska. She has done quite well at that and will do equally as well when she becomes President in 2012. Her biggest challenge there will be cleaning up the destruction left by the current administration.
