Investigations, Not Unemployment, Top Republican Agenda

Wake up America! You’ve been “had.”

Based on the outcome of the last election, it’s obvious the American people are angry, fed up. Many of you who voted wanted change and you elected more Republicans to represent you and your needs in Washington. It is my understanding you’ve sent them there to: Create jobs, turn the economy around, secure/protect our borders, and keep the terrorists at bay.

So imagine my surprise when I heard Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell say: “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

Is that what you’re sending these people to Washington for? To take over the House of Representatives in order to get the big guy out of the big White House on Pennsylvania Avenue?!? I must’ve missed that in the polls. [See where McConnell gets his campaign money.]

And imagine my surprise further when California Rep. Darell Issa said he wants numerous investigators hired and wants to create seven subcommittees to hold “one or two hearings each week.” “I want seven hearings a week, times 40 weeks.” He wants to launch investigations into the bank bailout, the stimulus and, potentially healthcare reform. Has Mr. Issa forgotten that he and his party voted for the bank bailout? Against the will of the American people!?! And that his leader, former President George W. Bush signed it into law and now is pulling a mea culpa on the TV talk circuit as he tries to pitch his new book? (Obviously hoping to benefit from the Bush tax cuts on the sale of that book before January!)

[Take our poll: Will you buy Bush’s new memoir?]

And Mr. Issa better check his facts as opposed to rhetoric that some Republicans displayed in a campaign ad to get elected; the stimulus is working. And yes, it has created jobs. Although the unemployment rate hovers at 9.6 percent, on the average jobs were created in both the private and public sector. The stimulus increased employment by between 1.4 million and 3.3 million people, compared with what employment would have been otherwise. And that’s according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

When I heard Mr. Issa’s proposal to waste time and taxpayer money on investigations looking backward rather than going forward, I was reminded of President Obama’s comparison of the Republicans being in “R” for reverse and the Democrats in “D” for drive. The Republicans it seems don’t want to create jobs, don’t want to improve the economy, or secure our borders; they don’t want peace with our enemies or peace within the walls of Congress working bipartisanly for the betterment of the American people; they want to dig up any dirt they can on the president to unseat him. Is that what you elected those Tea Party members and the Republicans to do?! And with all of those subcommittees, wouldn’t that be more government? The polls I read showed that you wanted less.

So wake up America! You’ve been “had.” And come November 2012, I hope you remember. Pay attention. Because the jobs being created now, and the economic turnaround you’re going to see from now until 2012 will be the work of the Democratic Congress and this president, Barack Obama. But I’m sure Mr. McConnell and Mr. Issa and their party will try to take the credit for it! Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on … well you know. Don’t let these people and this party pull the wool over your eyes again. I have faith in you America, I’m counting on ya.
