Conservative Groups Launch Ad Attacks Against Michael Bennet

LAKEWOOD, Colo.--Any question that the battle has been joined in Colorado ended this weekend when no fewer than five attack ads were launched against Sen. Michael Bennet. The buy totaled $1.5 million this week alone.

[See who supports Bennet.]

It was a veritable right-wing word generator of interchangeable ads. The Club For Growth/American Crossroads/Chamber of Commerce are throwing out every poll-tested economic buzzword they can, piled on by the National Republican Senatorial Committee and Ken Buck himself.

Why? Because the Republicans are hoping if they throw enough accusations out there, suburban voters--especially suburban women--won’t notice Ken Buck’s retrograde, anti-women views. Buck thinks a 14-year-old girl who has been molested by her stepfather, or a woman who has been raped, should be forced to carry that pregnancy to term. He opposes abortion in almost all cases, including for victims of rape or incest.

This does not go over well with the Independent voters who will likely determine the election, as noted in the Denver Post article “Suburbs hold Key to Buck’s Chances.” The article points out that in the Republican primary Buck lost swing suburban counties in Denver to Jane Norton, and these voters “can be easily spooked by extreme social conservatism.”

"The suburbs are really the key, and suburban women are the most important subgroup of all," said Lori Weigel, a pollster for Public Opinion Strategies.

It’s a bit counter-intuitive, but being antichoice is a liability in Colorado, an historically prochoice state. Colorado was the first state to liberalize abortion laws post-Griswold (in 1967) and it has resisted efforts to substantially limit abortion rights ever since, under Republican and Democratic governors alike.

So Buck’s views put him at odds at with the majority of Colorado voters and the voters “easily spooked by extreme social conservatism.” How much of a liability that proves to be will be played out over the next six weeks.

@Brett and Schaefer:

The problem with that thought is forcing an unwanted pregnancy on a rape victim only means that you have just given that victim and even that child a life sentence. And if the victim can't support the child you've just given it a death sentence.

Buck is anti-tax and does not support programs for orphanages or children put up for adoption so really he is forcing the children to suffer for a crime they had nothing to do with and carry that shame the rest of their life however long that may be.

@Brett

Given the above situation where a mother is being forced to raise a child she doesn't want and/or can't afford...why on earth would you kill the only person responsible for that child? If you really wanted justice the rapist would be forced to work to pay for that child. Unfortunately Forced labor camps have been outlawed for a long time. If we brought them back you might be able to support the child off of the father's work. The catch is large corporations do not appreciate a Government entity (aka the prisons) taking jobs that they could charge more for and give their workers less for. They see this as taking money out of their hands. And private prisons are notoriously corrupt and inhumane. So the only jobs the prisoners would be able to get are the ones illegal immigrants take but giving a convicted rapist the freedom to move like and immigrant to find those jobs would defeat the purpose of prison. And none of this would take away from the fact that the woman is still being forced to raise an unwanted child and never forget that she was raped. This and the fact that your supposedly spreading your influence by spreading your bloodline is why soldiers in third world countries and even American soldiers (Vietnam) are encouraged to rape the women no the opposing side.

It's a terrible thing if a woman gets raped, but it's not the baby's fault that that happened. If a woman gets raped, the rapist should receive the death penalty and the baby should live. The circustances of the pregnancy doesn't make the baby any less of a person.

Yes, Buck is a moron. Unfortunately, so is Michael Bennett.

What AWESOME choices we have! We can figure out who'll do the least amount of damage, or speed the nation on its way by selecting who'll do the greatest amount of damage.

After all, why settle for the lesser evil?
