Supreme Court Ruling Empowers Corporations More Than Labor Unions

Are corporations really persons?

Do corporations think?

Do corporations weep?

Do corporations fall in love?

Do corporations grieve when a loved one dies as a result of a lack of adequate health care?

Do corporations have loved ones?

Are corporations even capable of loving?

Do corporations sometimes lose sleep at night worrying about disease, violence, destruction, and the suffering of their fellow human beings?

Do corporations feel your pain?

Is a corporation capable of having a sense of humor? Is it capable of laughing at itself? (EXAMPLE: "So these two corporations walk into a bar....")

If a corporation ever committed an unspeakable crime against the American people, could IT be sent to federal prison? (Note the operative word here: "It")

Has a corporation ever walked into a voting booth and cast a ballot for the candidate of its choice?

We all know that corporations have made a mountain of cash throughout our history by profiting on the unspeakable tragedy of war. But has a corporation ever given its life for its country?

Is a corporation capable of raising a child?

Has a corporation ever been killed in an accident as the result of a design flaw in the automobile it was driving?

Has a corporation ever written a novel or a dramatic play or a song that inspired millions?

Has a corporation ever risked its life by climbing a ladder to save a child from a burning house?

Has a corporation ever won an Oscar? Or an Emmy? Or a Tony? Or the Nobel Peace Prize? Or a Polk or Peabody Award? Or the Pulitzer Prize in Biography?

Has a corporation ever performed Schubert's Ave Maria?

Has a corporation ever been shot and killed by someone who was using an illegal and unregistered gun?

Has a corporation ever paused to reflect upon the simple beauty of an autumn sunset or a brilliant winter moon rising in the horizon?

If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a noise if there are no corporations there to hear it?

Should corporations kiss on the first date?

Could a corporation resolve to dedicate its vocation to being an artist? Or a musician? Or an opera singer? Or a Catholic priest? Or a Doctor? Or a Dentist? Or a sheet metal worker? Or a gourmet chef? Or a short-order cook? Or a magician? Or a nurse? Or a trapeze artist? Or an author? Or an editor? Or a Thrift Shop owner? Or a EMT worker? Or a book binder? Or a Hardware Store clerk? Or a funeral director? Or a sanitation worker? Or an actor? Or a comedian? Or a glass blower? Or a chamber maid? Or a film director? Or a newspaper reporter? Or a deep sea fisherman? Or a farmer? Or a piano tuner? Or a jeweler? Or a janitor? Or a nun? Or a Trappist Monk? Or a poet? Or a pilgrim? Or a bar tender? Or a used car salesman? Or a brick layer? Or a mayor? Or a soothsayer? Or a Hall-of-Fame football player? Or a soldier? Or a sailor? Or a butcher? Or a baker? Or a candlestick maker?

Could a corporation choose to opt out of all the above and merely become a bum? Living life on the road, hopping freight trains and roasting mickeys in the woods?

I realize that this is pure theological speculation on my part but the question is just screaming to be posed: When corporations die, do they go to Heaven?

Our lives - yours and mine - have more worth than any damned corporation. The Supreme Court's decision on Thursday was beyond wrongheaded. Not only was it obscene - it was an insult to our humanity.

If you read the concurring opinion by Justice Roberts (joined by Justice Alito) you will find Roberts clearly stating his prejudice by saying that if the Court could have found in favor of the plaintiff (Citizens United) without overturning existing precedents, it should have done so. BUT, since law and precedents did not facilitate his (their) desired outcome, they riddled settled law from 1907 to present---addressing over-broad questions that no one had asked.

These two arrogant Catholic men who both were guaranteed by Bush and their supporters to not be "judicial activists", together with the other three arrogant Catholic men (Scalia, Thomas and Kennedy) have dealt you a blow you cannot recover from until this decision is somehow reversed---probably by their replacement yet years away. They were put on the Court specifically to overturn Roe v. Wade----but they instead are DEFTLY SKIPPING THAT while putting you into involuntary servitude to corporations in case after case after case. All Christians should be outraged. And all Catholics should be embarrassed to tears. Their "men" of the court are imposters.

A Union represents individuals who belong to the Union. Is there a corporation that represents you? Union members vote on Union policy. Are there members of corporations, beyond a handful at the top, that vote for how they spend money on political influence? Twisted Logic, you are livng in a dreamworld created by the bainwashing you have recieved by the Republican Leadership. Corporations are run by psychopathic, conscienceless freeks. Do you think they are going to do anything, or stand for anything except lining their own pockets, and raping this country and its citizens of their rights and liberties?

Look. The bottom line is that a corporation IS NOT A PERSON! There is no guarantee of rights to anything but persons, ie individuals in the Constitution. A corporation isn't even a group of people. It is an abstact entity. A corporation is not even like a PAC, which represents the political views of a group of people. Nobody in a corporation votes, or even agrees to how money is used politically. Such decisions are made by a handful of individuals who control the corporation, who are not beholding to anyone, not the consumers who originally provide the money, not the employees who work for them, and not even shareholders, who generally have no knowledge of these decisions beforehand, and who usually could care less as long as their stock value is going up. This is an extremely bad decision, which has injured or democracy beyond measure. The idea that the people can best corporate influence is unlikely, unless you envision a French Revolution-like senario, inwhich people march to the steps of the Supreme Court, and the Senate, and drag the members out into the street. Why? Simply because a handful of corporate executives can organize a great deal more money faster than 100,000,000 people can.

So much name calling yet no one has refuted or responded to my points. Why? Because you can't, that's why! You say Big Union can't compete against Corps. Well, Big Union makes up 12% of American workers. They DO NOT speak for the rest of us, even those in unions.......check out the MASS election results! So how can I, as a private citizen, go up against and compete aginst Big Union? That is NOT a level playing field so they should be barred from funding elections as well. Right back at ya! (Here comes more name calling...............)

Where does the Constitution state that a "level playing field" must exist for one to be granted freedom of speech? If you want a "level playing field", there is no way in the world that I, as a private citizen, can compete with Big Union. So do we now take away their freedom of speech? You should go back to 1st grade and learn about our Constitution!

Obviously this rulig is a result of either supreme arrogance or somebody, or bodies, got some cash. How can these idiots presume that there view of the Constitution is more valid than 60 years of Supreme Court rulings that preceded it? How could they come to the short sighted opinion that it is more important to adhere to the infered meanings of printed words on paper than create laws to ensure free elections. Since when are rich groups of investors individuals that need the freedom of speach to represent the needs of their assets; these assets do not posses voices.

In my opinio the cash got transfered to these short sighted dumb asses. May they reap what they sow

This is not only a narrow but upside down view and one which can only be arrived at from the dissent. This administration has baited the court from day one by demonizing corporations and at the same time gagging these same corporations from exercising free speech. This decision does not make a corporation a person. It does say individuals do not lose free speech( monetary clout in this instance) as representatives of unions, corporations, non-profits etc. This addressed Mccain Finegold but I see it as a shot across the bow of the executive branch. That dissent could have been written by any Democratic policy wonk in DC. Logic and reason? I read may be and assumptions and a huge bias against corporations. I am a member of the hopeless as Awesome of CA noted and look forward to more may be and assumptions in the dissent of future court decisions.

Although I haven't read any of the legal briefs I can be rest assured the press has somewhat swayed the argument toward their point of view. I can say this though; this country is for the people and not for corporations or unions. Only way to swing this back into the hands of the people is to start organizing as a people and pool our donations and voting power. Remember, donations does not equal votes only influence. Donations and votes, by an organized group of citizens, will influence members of congress far more than corporations or unions can. The power to persuade by votes has gone out the window if we can’t provide some financial support.

Chris Churchill of TX 9:09PM January 22, 2010

Didn't all those Conservatives promise that "settled law" doesn't get overturned unless there's a huge suffering that needs redress.

Corporations are not endowed by their maker (Congress) with inalienable constitutional rights. This ruling is an outrage!

The post by "ed of AL" illustrates the futility of relying on reason and logic when dealing with the GOP base. Rather than reading the article (or even just the one line that sums it all up, "The checkbook for corporations dwarfs that of labor"), this individual immediately lapses into talking points and wild assumptions.

It is comforting to know that blind partisans such as this are dwindling in number.
