The Free Market May Part Glenn Beck From Fox News
Tweet Share on Facebook September 30, 2010 Comment (24)The top story from next Sunday's edition of the New York Times Magazine was published yesterday, as it was Wednesday. (Go figure.) It's a revealing profile of Glenn Beck by Mark Leibovich. And it contains bad news for conservatives, who may have to make a choice between Beck and their favorite network, Fox News, which apparently is not happy with the poster child of malcontent.

More Tea Party Hypocrisy: Angle Gets Government Healthcare
Tweet Share on Facebook September 29, 2010 Comment (18)More Tea Party hypocrisy. We have already had Christine O'Donnell campaigning in Delaware for fiscal prudence while not paying her bills. And Joe Miller telling voters in Alaska to get Washington off their backs, after he took federal farm subsidies. And now we have Sharron Angle, urging us all to take up arms and abolish federal health and retirement programs--while she is covered, thank you very much, by oh-so-generous federal health insurance.

The Parallels Between the Vietnam War and the Afghanistan War
Tweet Share on Facebook September 28, 2010 Comment (9)A few weeks back I watched We Were Soldiers, the Vietnam War movie starring Mel Gibson. It tells the story of the heroic men of the 7th Cavalry (General Custer's old unit) who defended LZ X-Ray in the battle of the Ia Drang valley, at the beginning of the U.S. escalation in November 1965.

America Is Not a Center-Right Nation (Nor Center-Left)
Tweet Share on Facebook September 24, 2010 Comment (3)I hesitate to pick a fight with my friend Peter Roff. When the tumbrels come to cart me off to a re-education camp on the alkaline flats of Idaho, he has promised to put in a good word for me with Sarah, Christine, Sharron, and the other Madame Defarges he lauds in his most recent post. Boy, I'll wish I had exercised my Second Amendment remedies on that day, huh?

More Reasons Not to Build a Casino at Gettysburg
Tweet Share on Facebook September 24, 2010 Comment (6)I have written in this space about saving Gettysburg from becoming a third-rate Reno or Atlantic City. A developer wants the Pennsylvania gaming commission to give him a license to operate a casino on the fringes of the hallowed battlefield, and historians and local residents are marching to stop him.

Tea Party Candidate Joe Miller's Government Spending Hypocrisy
Tweet Share on Facebook September 21, 2010 Comment (42)Another day, another Tea Party hypocrisy.
It seems that U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller of Alaska--that anti-socialist, constitutional purist who professes to believe in minimalist government--did not spurn the federal handout when it came to his own wallet. He pocketed $7,000 of our money in the form of federal farm subsidies.

Christine O'Donnell's Fiscal Gaffes Should Shame Palin, Tea Party
Tweet Share on Facebook September 20, 2010 Comment (32)The Tea Party types claim they are about fiscal responsibility.
And yet they are gaga over Christine O'Donnell, their candidate in the Delaware Senate race.

Moderate Republicans Snowe, Collins Should Go Independent
Tweet Share on Facebook September 17, 2010 Comment (9)Dana Bash from CNN brings news that Sen. Olympia Snowe, a moderate Republican from Maine, is troubled by the increased influence of reactionary elements in the Republican Party. She should be. And so should her Republican seatmate, Sen. Susan Collins. They face an unappealing choice: to tailor their principles to appease the rabid host, or to lose someday—like their more conservative colleagues Robert Bennett and Lisa Murkowski, or fellow moderate Mike Castle—to a candidate backed by the Tea Party in a Republican primary.

Holes in the Case for Keeping Bush Tax Cuts for the Rich
Tweet Share on Facebook September 16, 2010 Comment (23)Sen. Chuck Grassley is a pretty good guy. And until I read his op-ed a bit more closely, he almost persuaded me that for a couple of years, until hiring accelerates, we should let the rich folks keep their Bush tax cuts.
