Alan Simpson Is Right: Government Is a Giant Milk Cow
Tweet Share on Facebook August 25, 2010 Comment (20)Alan Simpson is right. America has become a "milk cow" with 310 million teats. We all feed off the government--from big commercial cotton and sugar farmers to Wall Street financiers to General Motors to the fabulously, obscenely rich folks for whom John Boehner, the Republican House leader, wants to give a big, permanent tax cut.

Why Are Palin, Gingrich, and Fox News Doing Bin Laden's Work?
Tweet Share on Facebook August 24, 2010 Comment (50)I have been told by Fox commentators Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich that to be a good American I should detest Muslims. After all, it was Muslims from Saudi Arabia who steered the airplanes into the Pentagon and the twin towers on Sept. 11, 2001. And now they want to build a mosque at ground zero!
But by their own logic, shouldn't I detest Palin and Gingrich? After all, they work for Muslims.

L.L. Bean is Turning Into J. Crew
Tweet Share on Facebook August 13, 2010 Comment (11)I have been, for most of my adult life, a big fan of L.L. Bean, the giant mail order house in Freeport, Maine. The Bean catalogs carried with them, to whatever sweltering climate I lived in, the breath of a cool Canadian wind through the pines. They offered sound, thrifty items of New England--from the silly duck shoes to the flannel-lined dungarees to the splendid maple syrup. And durable? For more presidential campaigns than I care to remember, and to this day, my carry-on luggage has been a blue L.L. Bean bag, which I received as a gift 30 years ago. It appears to be indestructible. It seems destined to outlive me and bear my ashes.
