Oh, c'mon, you say. There's no split in the Republican Party. Libertarians and social conservatives can get along just fine. It's the Democrats who are pushing the Nanny State down our throats.

Well, consider this statement from the Concerned Women of America, on the sinful conduct of former congressman Mark Souder, who was caught doing the horizontal mambo with one of his aides, notwithstanding that both were married to other people.

[See which industries donated the most to Souder.]

Souder might have been saved, says Penny Nance, the Christian conservative activist who heads the Concerned Women, with some "common rules of etiquette" that the rest of us need to follow. These include compulsory windows in our workplace doors, and "careful examination of employee/boss interaction."

What say you, libertarians? Is that really what we need in America? Mandatory windows so the snoops and busybodies can have a better look as they poke around in our private lives? More "careful examination" (whatever that means--it sounds like a proposal for conduct commissars to me) of how we behave with others at work?

Just when the hysteria over sexual harassment in the workplace was dying down, Ms. Nance uses the hypocritical and lustful behavior of two of her fellow "family values" types as an excuse to argue for further intrusions in our privacy and freedom.

There are worse things than TARP, Dr. Paul.

Religion stresses "forgiveness." Mythic God sends Christ to die to forgive everybody for "the Fall of Man." That was the first act of sexual intercourse when Eve & Adam obeyed the command to "be fruitful & multiply & fill the world with Christians." Until Christ came along, tithes and fees went to Jewish rabbis. After Christian conversions, the money flowed to Christian preachers. When Jesus told adulterous men when it was OK to throw stones, the men knew all of them used the same poor women as whores. They kept the women poor so they'd have to be whores or starve. Watch the next sex scandal between believers. Hubby asks the wife to forgive him, and maybe she does. Theh he asks church members to forgive him, and often they do. It is a given. The set-up is there, ready to use whenever a younger or more flirtatious or needy "office clerk" or "parson's aide" comes along & competes for family assets. Forgiveness and mercy mean there is no justice. This is why atheism is more ethical. There is no Heavenly reward for "being good" and no "Hell for being bad."
