Many have commented that others ought to keep out of Virginia politics and leave the land issue of Chancellorsville up to Virginians. Excuse me, our Northern ancestors fought and died there as well. That property belongs to all of us. It is holy ground. It is not for any company, store or franchise to destroy forever. It is a symbol of our patriotism and we should never ruin this property. It is not in our best interest to do so. To build on such a sacred land is so disrespectful demonstrating America's total lack of integrity and patriotism. I commend the efforts of all who are patriotic enough and care enough to save it for our children. Joanne Farrell Rens.,NY

I understand that the CWPT has only until Dec. 31st to be able to use available matching funds through the VA. legislature. Cannot the legislature be petitioned to prolong the life of those matching funds until April 15th. Like many Americans i am just tapped out right now but when i reeive my return i most certainly will contribute more. Whaddayall thunk!

Being from the west coast I grew up with little attachment or understanding of the Civil War. Since living in Atlanta for the last 20 years and working through the NPS to preserve these battlefields I now understand the dual value of these lands - preservation of these lands as history lessons on the war and all wars and preservation of historic open space to give a sense of attachment of the present populus with the people who came before them. Every year I contribute to the funding of five or six major projects of the Civil War Preservation Trust. Hope the reader of this comment will do likewise.

Chancellorsville remains a key battlefield for study by Civil War historians. Jackson was perhaps the greatest tactical general in our nation's history. Preserve this sacred ground where Americans fought Americans and shaped the nation in which we live today.

If the state of New York can confiscate someone's private property under the auspice of "eminent domain" to thus allowa a corporation to build a basketball arena, then surely, this hallowed, sacred ground in question should more than qualify as "eminent domain".

The Civil War Historical Society should go to court and get an injunction to disallow the knucklehead owner from selling his 85 acres to anyone other than the government or affiliated non profit organization.

The historical significance of the property in question is invaluable.
