Rick Santorum Deserves Our Respect

April 11, 2012 RSS Feed Print

It is fitting former Sen. Rick Santorum chose Gettysburg to suspend his campaign because, like General Robert E. Lee 150 years before him, he had reached that city by surviving longer than anyone expected.

Despite spending months on the trail with little money, low name recognition, and a skeleton staff, Santorum managed to win nearly a dozen GOP nominating contests and to finish a clear second behind former Gov. Mitt Romney in the Republican presidential race.

[See pictures of Rick Santorum.]

He kept battling as Rep. Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Gov. Rick Perry, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich took turns as the leading "conservative alternative" to Romney. He soldiered on as the 24/7 cable news apparatus pounded him on everything from calling President Obama a "snob" to controversial remarks by a key supporter about contraception.

He worked crowds. He made eye contact. He appealed to the common man.

He spoke for social conservatives when other candidates wouldn't. He brought a passion to the campaign trail, an unscripted enthusiasm that charmed voters and confounded pundits. He didn't so much set a new standard for candidate openness as revive an old one.

There is much to second-guess about Santorum's campaign. Perhaps he should've gone to South Carolina after his impressive showing in Iowa or gone all in to win Michigan.

But trailing in his home state of Pennsylvania and with his young daughter sick—and being a candidate who truly does put family first—he chose the right path.

His attacks had become increasingly bellicose as Romney's lead stretched, and only the Obama opposition research team benefited from that. This way, he gets credit for a graceful exit, for pushing Romney to the right, and for being a team player who knows when to say when.

As a result, it's not just possible but likely we haven't heard the last of Rick Santorum.

I cannot commend RICK SANTORUM whatsoever. If anything, he and Gingrich only weakened the Republican Party's chances of taking back the White House.

For better or worse, our media-influenced society is secular humanist. Efforts to resurrect a Jesus oriented, abortion free, marriage only-for-a-man-and-a-woman social view stand little if any chance today - and anyone who imparts these P.R. viewpoints will fail in a bid for Presidency.

Obama won out over Hillary Clinton (that was the "real" Presidential race) because he and his team knew how to use the media to his advantage. The Republicans don't have a clue.

Santorum should never have dissed Romney as he did. More importantly, Santorum and his advisors should have seen the futility and DANGER of espousing viewpoints that clearly are no longer accepted by our modern day society.

I am not saying that Santorum's viewpoints are not good. I'm saying that his discretion should have kept his mouth shut on them.

Just as Obama's mouth says one thing, but his actions reveal something totally different.

Thus, to me, Santorum blew it. Now, if he's smart, he'll jump on the Romney wagon and encourage Mitt to not make the same stupid P.R. blunders that he made!

Whoever our next President will be, will be glad when he is chosen.

The MOTHER OF ALL DEBT CHUMPS of ALL PRESIDENTS needs to go home. The present "religious zealot" in WH makes Rick Santorum appear SAINTLY.

LAWYER buma & Acorn were part of the idiots that gave us the GREAT RECESSION. PREZ bum was able to extend length. His debt with $$$ 16 trillion in FUNNY MONEY printed and loaned to foreign banks along with Wall Street (falsely supporting our economy) could be the NEXT WORSE GREAT RECESSION. No matter how hard my side tries to stop it...

It's barely been 24 hours since that religious zealot, rick santorum, left the campaign trail. That being said, his worshiper;s are, already making it sound like he was the second coming. If logic prevails their next goal will be for his placement on a postage stamp.followed by a request for his cannonization.
