King’s Niece Picked the Wrong Fight at Glenn Beck’s D.C. Rally
Tweet Share on Facebook August 31, 2010 Comment (53)I agree with the Washington Post's Jonathan Capehart who says self-proclaimed King legacy heir, and niece, Alveda King had every right to speak her mind at Glenn Beck's controversial rally in Washington, D.C., this past weekend. But I and others like me have just as much right to proclaim her tacky and wrong-headed in using the occasion to speak out against gay and abortion rights. Capehart's beef is not exactly the same as mine.

Bristol Palin a Good Role Model for Teens
Tweet Share on Facebook August 26, 2010 Comment (19)At first blush, I have no problem with a shelter for young Christian moms paying Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol $14,000 for a speech. Yes, that's a lot of money to hear from a young woman who has done precious little with her life other than have a baby out of wedlock. But Bristol has, most of the time, been disarmingly honest about the effect of unmarried, teen pregnancy on her life. She has said she chose to keep her child because she is prolife, but she has also been outspoken about what that decision has cost her. So in that sense, she is a good role model for teens. "Don't do as I did" is the general message one gets from Ms. Palin's interviews, not, “It's great and fun and you can still party."

Anne Frank’s Tree Falls As Holocaust Denial Rises
Tweet Share on Facebook August 23, 2010 Comment (25)How sad and odd, that the so-called Anne Frank tree in Amsterdam should fall at a time when Holocaust denial is growing, especially in the Arab world, according to one White House official.

Is 2010 the Year of Republican Women, or Women’s Decline?
Tweet Share on Facebook August 20, 2010 Comment (4)2010 is either the year of the Republican woman in politics, or it's not. I'm glad TIME Magazine has finally caught up with the realization that Republican women are running for the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House, and for governor in record numbers. But even Time quotes Rutgers University's Center for American Women and Politics Director Debbie Walsh as saying, they're running but they're not winning their primaries.

Obama’s 'Ground Zero Mosque' Comments Help the Republicans
Tweet Share on Facebook August 17, 2010 Comment (18)The White House stepped into a crater the size of ground zero when President Obama decided late last week to weigh in on the side of Islamic supporters who want to build a mosque two blocks away. White House aides spent much of Monday explaining that President Obama's comments on the so-called "ground zero mosque" were not politically motivated. This of course is not stopping Republicans from seizing on those remarks and trying to take political advantage.

Linda McMahon's Raw WWE Past Hurts Her in Senate Smackdown
Tweet Share on Facebook August 11, 2010 Comment (5)The 2010 elections may be remembered as the year of the self-funded Republican female candidate. As every American who has not been living in a cave or in a locked basement knows by now, billionaire Meg Whitman of eBay fame is self-funding her run for governor of California to the tune of $100 million so far. She is expected to plunk down another $50 million, mainly on TV and video ads, between now and Election Day.

Racism Isn't Behind the Rangel and Waters Ethics Investigations
Tweet Share on Facebook August 10, 2010 Comment (10)High fives to Democratic Reps. Maxine Waters of California and Charles Rangel of New York for telling the National Newspaper Publishers Association, also known as the Black Press of America, that they do not cite racism as the reason for the U.S. House's Office of Congressional Ethics investigations into their financial activities. The farther away we stay from the murky swamp of the term racism and the anger it incites in all corners and among persons of all colors of this country, the stronger a nation we shall be.
