The best advice I can offer women who want to skirt the ledge of bankruptcy is A—don't overspend and B—don't have children without a financial backup plan—make sure you or your husband will always have enough money to support those kids if one of you loses a job—even if the marriage falls apart.

Unfortunately, with the open border philosophy we have today, a more rational plan would force families to provide enough savings in case that BOTH the husband and wife are unemployed for an extended time period or are forced into a menial job with much reduced pay.

Think a little more before getting married, marriage is not about romance! Divorce is a major cause of poverty, especially if you quit working to care for kids or let your career take a backseat to family and then find out the marriage isn't working.

Bonnie I do not often agree with you even from your channel 13 days but in this case your advice is very sound. Not over spending and having a back up plan is good advice for every one , not just women. If you can not make a back up plan work you should think more before you leap. Sickness and accidents can leave you on your own as well as divorce. An in place backup plan helps overcome panic/despair when life throws you a curve. I have run my entire life with backup plans not because I am smarter, but because my parents could not bail me out. I knew I had to bail myself out. Sometimes not having assets becomes an asset.

Part of today's issue with the economy is younger people have not seen this before, and despite all the news stories , we have been here in the past The difference this time is fat cats were hit and not just blue collar workers. If we do not continue to drive the national debt off the cliff , we will get out of this in time.
