The response to national disaster is great but it's a real shame that so many citizens take advantage of the sad situations.

I mean everytime there is an earthquake, a flood, an oil spill - there's always a group of heartless people who rip off tax payers.

This is in response to reading that 4 of Oprah Winfreys "angels" got busted ripping off the system. Shame on them!

It is just ridiculous to imagine that abstinence only education works at all. I've been teaching my kids "sex ed" since they were born. Recently my 13 year old daughter told me that her health teacher explained to the class that condoms fail 40% of the time. I was livid. I told her it wasn't true. I also told her not to have sex until at least college. I've been telling her that for years. I hope she'll wait that long at least. I also hope she doesn't marry until she is something close to 30 years old. I don't expect her to remain chaste that long, so safety is a better ideal to teach than abstinence. Just my opinion.

This is a welcome change. An Abstinence only curriculum is like trying to cap a raging volcano and makes educators look like total buffoons in the classroom as they try to teach it. We seem to do a good job teaching our students about quadratic equations, Beowolf and American History. But what about understanding their bodies and the physical and emotional implications of a sexual relationship? The 'don't ask-don't tell' approach that has long prevailed has never worked and continues to fail our children by creating unrealistic expectations.

Why not look at how the Scandinavian countries approach sex education. Their kids are every bit as ripe and randy as ours but do not have nearly the teen pregnancy rates we do.

Is it alright to lie? I mean us kids are going to be dishonest at some point, so should parents teach us how to lie safely?

this is a refreshingly civil conversation you guys are having! Yay!

I have to say that I completely agree with Todd.

Patrick, I think we have to remember that there is a distinction between illegal drugs and legal sexual activity. It would be illegal for a public school to teach kids anything other than to abstain from illegal drugs.

Paul, I'm sorry that you feel that comprehensive sex education is the equivalent of "whatever feels good" education. I'm not sure if you had the benefit of such a program growing up, but I did. Just as Bonnie says in the article, those programs heavily emphasize the risks associated with choosing to be sexually active.

One of the points that I think gets lost in these discussions is that sex education programs provide students with information that they will need for the rest of their lives. The average age of marriage is getting older and people are staying single well into their thirties. Add to that, the fact that children are maturing sexually much earlier, and you have an entire generation who will spend sometimes 20 years of sexual maturity unmarried. It's a completely unrealistic expectation that they all remain virgins until marriage. When are they supposed to have learned the lessons they will most certainly need as adults? We could say that comprehensive sex education should only be taught in college, to older kids. But, then you've just eliminated comprehensive sex education for the kids who need it the most: those from lower incomes, who don't go to college, who are significantly more likely to find their lives interrupted by an unplanned pregnancy. Comprehensive sex education has again and again proven itself to be more effective. Why would choose anything else?
