Reagan left the biggest national debt in history. He borrowed to create an enormous "military establishment." It enriched corporate executives who contributed to his campaigns. Lockheed, Bechtel, Parsons, GE, the usual benefactors of wars, received enormous contracts. His brand of Big Government was the same as every Ban-Abortion official. Taxes were spent on more jails because drugs were CRIMINALIZED, and for the vast "Drug Enforcement" network here & abroad. Reagan's "Star Wars" absorbed billions of dollars that should have been spent on projects for which the taxes were collected. Reagan is on record saying the pope guided his presidency. He & the pope were on Time's cover, bragging they destroyed the USSR. Reagan's Cold War spending spree added even more debt. McCain-Palin are like Reagan: wanting Big Government in the form of huge federal & state payrolls to find & punish doctors who do abortions for poor women. The Democratic Party was weakened by Dixiecrats who hated integration. It has moles now, who vote the way their preachers & priests tell them. The Party system itself is bad. So few people at Party conventions name the people we find on ballots and are stuck with them.

Bonnie, if labels make you nervous for yourself, how do you think the rest of us feel. Maybe you should try to use less labeling yourself in your articles.

For those of you sympathetic to the limited-government mindset,

Libertarians are NOT anarchists. The equation of limited government with no government at all is a fallacious one, and you should be ashamed of yourself for making the spurious connection. Libertarians believe in a limited government, true; but the government still exits and still has a role in governance.

Perhaps next time, do your homework a little more. Uninformed comments make you substantially less credible.

Not sure why you would consider Mexico or Paraguay "libertarian utopias" I don't know much about Paraguay but I assume it's like the rest of Latin America. At least in Mexico the rule of law means very little and the government is either ineffectual, corrupt, or busy nationalizing industries.

Government is a necessarily evil that's there to protect my right to life liberty and property (the original wording of the Declaration of Independence that was changed so as not to imply that slavery was OK) I don't see the government of Mexico (and I assume Paraguay) doing those things.

Michael Simpson of NM 6:26PM November 24, 2009

Libertarians are not anarchist, and pretty much fits in what you described. We believe there needs to be a strong government, just not a big government and in personal liberty. That is a far cry from anarchy which is 'no' government.

Until now, Bonnie has been quite perplexing to me. One column, she seems like a classic "liberal" (which I am not), and in another, maybe even a "conservative" (which I am). I have, from one day to the next, been in total opposition, and the next to think she is correct today. Now, in all amazement to myself, I find that I agree with her concerning labels. Perhaps now is the time for us, Americans, to increase our focus on the candidate and less on the label. Would the result of this be the demise of "Democrats" and "Republicans"? If so, then perhaps the label is (gasp!) INDEPENDENT. If America really could get people in Congress who tried to do the best for this country and forget those dadburn parties, life might get better for all of us.

James of MS 5:16PM November 24, 2009

I think I am insulted. Libertarians are not anarchist. Do some more research friend. You are misguided.

We believe in the rule of law to protect people's rights and defend those rights. That is the proper rule of government. Government should only use force to protect rights, those rights being life, liberty and property.

IE Don't tread on me.

"Common defense and enforcement of laws and contracts are the major roles the government should play"

Have you ever thought about moving to Paraguay? I think you would love it there. It's a libertarian utopia. Mexico is another place you might like.
