Please do your research and try not to lump all belivers into one pot. Many "religions" are a scam, but a personal relationship with Jesus will be sorely missed when you can't use your millions in the grave. He was either a liar, a lunitic, or God, research the latest findings, not 50 year old text, and you will beable to make an intellegent , educated choice.

How is it on topic for Schaefer to infer any other commentator is mentally ill? This week, a celebrity described years of very costly treatment by a psychiatrist. The doctor said patients seem to be very pleased to have it known they can AFFORD to pay lots of money for psychiatric sessions. If preachers are acting as costly "shrinks," they have plenty to work with. Believers are never happy here in "this vale of tears." They NEED God to lug them over hard patches in their lives. They have "sin-sick souls." They want to "go home to protective Daddy God." They "carry their heavy cross," but are weary. They're glad enough to have had Christ as their whipping boy and take punishment they are told they deserve. They are nervous, depressed, but they feel relieved to go to church and have seat mates see how much they can AFFORD to give. This insulting commentator is wrong on so many guesses. It proves how free he is with commenting about people in circles to which he can never belong--educationally, intellectually and financially. I am a millionaire times over and never need to pray as Schafer seems to do every day. Let him continue to expose his lack of etiquette and poor manners. Religion is a racket and he fell for it.

It's about time young women are rewarded for NOT getting pregnant. In my experience, because of the financial rewards for getting pregnant (not to mention the socio cultural issues) there are many pluses to getting pregnant as a teen. You get paid & don't have to work, you get significantly reduced housing costs, free medical care, free food and free child care.

Ms. Erbe's numbers seem off. $9.1 Billion divided by the $500,000 per pregnancy comes up with only 18,200 teen pregnancies per year. Is that just for North Carolina? The stats come from a National organization so is that nationally?

Then Ms. Erbe cites stats that claim it only costs $75K to run the program. How many children is it helping? One, 100, 10,000? More importantly what is the success rate. 1%, 10%,50% 90%?

If you spend $75K and only 1% don't get pregnant the program is a failure

From the data presented we can't from a claim for or against this program.

BTW Ms Erbe you should change the name of this blog, Thomas Jefferson would be appalled at the idea of the government paying kids not to get pregnant. He was for personal responsibility and small federal governments. If the states want to adopt this he would say each state can do what they like.

Lastly, I think giving the kids the money is wrong, putting it in an account that they can use for college if and only if they don't get pregnant (and that doesn't mean they get pregnant and then have an abortion) would be a much better idea.

its inspired.

and if it works, its brilliant.

and these haters in the comments - wow. so much vitriol. I wonder why.

they *should* give accurate sex education in school, but since they do NOT, this looks like an interesting alternative.
