So obey our laws by NOT slaughtering these poor horses. Anyone that can slaughter any animal is sick. God put these animals here before us and we are to care for them. I believe there are too many immigrants in this country and if you don't like it go back to your own country. We U S citizens have to obey the laws and so do you. You are nobody special, besides you are taking all of our jobs and thats why the economy is what it is!

People, especially media don't really think about what they say. This is portrayal of absolute prejudice and stereotype for immigrants and uneducated people. If you don't have facts to back up your story, don't assume things, because you're just making and ass out of you and me. Oh yes, I'm Asian, but I don't slaughter horses, but I do slaughter chickens, pigs, and cows and I want to eat them, am I just going to eat them alive or what?

There appears to be a misquote either by the CFIA or the Western Producer who quoted them. According to multiple sources, including the Alberta Horse Welfare association, it is 16% , not 60% of the world population who eats horsemeat.

CHAPTER 2

- Historical Perspective of Horse Meat Consumption

Horse Meat Consumption & Trade Worldwide

Over one billion people, or 16% of the world population, eat horse meat. Horse meat is

commonly eaten in many European and Asian countries. According to the Food and Agriculture

Organization of the United Nations’ (FAO) FAOSTAT website (http://faostat.fao.org), 959,910

tonnes of equine meat was consumed worldwide in 2005, with total production being 1,040,450

tonnes.1

Canada Food Inspection Agency statistics report about 60 percent of the world's population consumes horse meat and Canada is one of the top two suppliers of horse meat to the EU.

There are about one million horses in Canada and in 2008, 111,000 were slaughtered in six federally inspected plants. The meat went to Europe, as well as Japan.

In 2008, 15,294 tonnes of horse meat were exported and about 300 tonnes were eaten in Canada, mainly in Quebec.

The sickest part of this is that by giving front page exposure to heinous barbarism -you provide the oxygen this evil feeds off of.Enough.

I'm sure you can find a video online somewhere of a kosher slaughter, it certainly does not take hours. It involves exactly the slitting an animals throat to allow the blood to drain out until it dies. All the kosher meat you buy with the K and circle around it has been killed this way. I hope you are a vegetarian (as am I), otherwise you wouldn't be able to justify the consumption of any meat if it is so unreasonably cruel to eat horse meat.

Don't get me wrong, the situation in Florida is horrifying. People's pets are being butchered in outrageously inhumane ways. I have been hoping for weeks now that a horse owner finds a butchering in progress and shoots the vermin responsible dead.

But let's also be real about how pigs and cows are slaughtered here for mass consumption by western, "intelligent" people. They are knocked in the head and bled out just as you described--hung by a leg, throat slit left to bleed. Alive. Pigs then are immediately scalded to remove their hair; cows are then skinned. The hope, that's right, the HOPE, is that they cannot feel what's going on, but we know that a percentage of animals do make it to the bleeding out part (and even the skinning/scalding part) still alive. It's a fact and a result of the insane pace at which slaughterhouses operate.

I'm not a vegetarian by any means, but really believe it's wrong to candy coat how our meat makes it to our tables each and every night.

Btw, 4-H kids sell their animals to slaughter at the end of the season. Usually to the highest bidder, which could of course be a family that slaughters in the traditional manner that your friend was so offended by.

Stephanie, Bonnie is writing about horses. It is her article and her choice for content. If you want to write about abortion, then start your own blog. Then we can come over to your blog that asks for commments on abortion and post about horses. How would that work for you?

Those of us that are trying to end horse slaughter are also involved in human charities and issues. We don't write or comment about them when we are writing or commenting on horses.

An abortion discussion has no place on comments on an article about horses.

First, she says:

"...the consumption of horse meat is popular even among educated peoples in France, Belgium, Japan and Italy"

The she says:

"Nonetheless, Mr. Couta says some of the horse meat sells to immigrants from developing nations for $40 per pound. They incorrectly believe horse meat helps cure AIDS, blood disorders and other ailments, which of course no kind of meat whatsoever can cure".

If only all Americans were that stupid and classless, I would die happy!
