There's actually a third:

3) McCain was a rotten choice.

I agree with Ms. Erbe 100%. Michael Steele is a numbskull, and becomes stupider every time he opens his mouth. The right wing of the Republican Party Rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and maybe Newt Gingrich besmirch the label "conservative". They are reactionaries who live in Hooverland.

Jack Golding of KS 3:38PM May 27, 2009

...swing voters, moderate Republicans, independents and thinking people from the GOP...

Thinking people? People like Chris Petty of Georgia?

[Hey Ann! I can be caustic, too!)

Republicans think? Maybe they should try these ideas on for size...

If you let the most extreme of your group define you then you're over. Rush and Dick? They are American Ahmedinajads.

This isn't 1980. The time for moving forward in reverse is over.

If you are so brave, why all the fearmongering? Between the boogeymen in the closet (gays) to the monster under the bed (BinLaden) all I hear from the right is "Game over, man. GAME OVER!!!"

Oh and don't forget that the gun-less dems are going to take away our right to bear arms! What does the bumper sticker say? "You can take my gun out of my cold dead hands?" Big talk from people afraid of gay marriage.

Basically, the equation looks like this...

Republican=F**ktards

Don't get mad at me--it's your party. You fix it.

(Hey Chris, your governor called and said he wants you to quit claiming Georgia as your home state.)

I still respect Colin Powell and actually thought he'd make a good Presidential candidate at one time. He's living in the closet so to speak now. No Conservative can possibly support Mr Obama's policies. Obama is the Anti-Republican.

Powell has only two choices:

1) I am a Democrat or...

2) I voted for Mr Obama for purely racial loyalty.

The Republicans lost because you could no longer tell them from Democrats. Or more importantly, they forgot to remind the American People the difference. The ONLY legitimate reason for OUR government to spend more than it has is WAR or Natural Disaster. GWB had BOTH.

Mr Obama promised "change" in Washington but what we've gotten is the same "ole time" Democratic Religion of Spend and TAX.

THEY call they Republicans the party of no new ideas?

Mr Obama has taken what would have been a painfull "financial correction" into what OUR GRANDCHILDREN will remember as a "Catastrophy".

Ms. Erbe, I apologize for all the disrespectful and harsh comments made by the obvious Republicans who made no real contribution or sane comment. You can always tell a Republican by the nasty, vicious, and sarcastic comments. It is rare when one of them make a real contribution or suggestion that would clarify the Republican thought. It is amazing how they all hide their heads in the sand and forget, conveniently, the past eight wasteful and incompetent years of the Cheney/Bush administration An administration that brought our nation to its knees by its hateful, exclusionary tactics, corruption and incompetence, and Cheney will go down as the worst v.p. in history, a man who badly advised his president. A party that whines, complains, and finds fault with everyone but themselves. They whine about Obama's health plan and condemn it as a "government run" and Socialist plan. But I have yet to see one Republican reject their government run health plan that is subsidized by the taxpayer. What hypocrits! They have no problem accepting a "Socialist" health plan for themselves but are totally against a worthy plan for the nation. Cheney dealt non-bid contracts to all his buddies at Halliburton, KBR and Blackwater--billions of taxpayer dollars down the drain. Billions of dollars with no transparency and we have no idea how much went to who or how it was spent. You may want to defend Cheney and the Looserbaugh all you want but the truth is---they could give a damn about this country. Cheney FIVE times fought for a deferment so he would not have to serve his country. Looserbaugh did the same thing bought his way out of serving this nation. At least Powell served his nation with honor.

Most of the truly thinking and creative people I know are Republicans. Erbe plays into the stereo-type of conservatives or traditionalists as dumb and ignorant.

Jayber Crow of SC 7:37PM May 26, 2009

Conservatives -- most of whom register as Republicans -- are NOT looking for candidates who are more like Powell. In fact, when I listened to Powell the other day, I was rather amazed that he did nothing but try to DEFEND his prior attacks on Limbaugh et. al. -- on the basis of HIS being a "real" Republican! Priceless!

The point is, Ms. Erbe, the Republican Party does NOT need massive capitulation to the conventional wisdom. The follies of the Obama Administration are becoming -- and will soon BE manifest. We -- women and men of good conscience -- are looking for a few good men AND WOMEN to carry the mantle of intelligent ideas.

Angelina of NY 7:02PM May 26, 2009

Reading the "Thoughts" was just about as good as reading that Erbe thinks minority status is ahead for Republicans unless . . .. The fact is, minority status is never ahead for Republicans as long as overreaching types like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi keep offering ammunition for Democrats' destruction.

I'm a liberal who knows there's more than a little truth to what Limbaugh, at one extreme, and Powell, at the other, have been saying. Democrats never seem to understand that their survival as a viable party is middle right, not far left. Republicans are on to something that eludes Democrats regularly--that Americans want moderation, not extremes. Limbaugh knows this by heart. Powell is trying to say as much as a moderate Republican.

Ms. Erbe, I commend your enthusiasm, but I do believe you need a bit more homework in history.

Ron W. Smith of UT 6:36PM May 26, 2009

I don't want Powell buttering my bread, give me Cheney and Limbaugh anyday. We have enough moderate crap going on. Give me less government and get them out of my life.

Jane Rowland of AZ 6:20PM May 26, 2009

I'm an independent, and moderate, seeing multiple sides to issues. I think this is not waffling or indecision, this is THINKING about things. The Republican party became simple-minded years ago and they stopped thinking about things. Instead they promote easy to understand ideas - loudly and frequently with anger. This resonated with some of the population - those who like simple explanations and remedies for problems, and blame others, such as "liberals" for our problems. (See preceding posts.) They tend to exclude those, like Powell, who want to consider alternatives.

The contrast is clear: the current President thinks and considers carefully. The previous one just implemented the (simple) party line, ignoring alternatives, to the detriment of the country. I support the thinking President on a number of issues (not all), and the thinking party right now, BUT remain independent. If they start believing that things are simple, they will lose my support.
