Why are historic milestones celebrated for women and minorities ONLY if they are Dems?

Signed,

a Republican mother of two who works full time and has held elected office

PS - a couple of my female political heros are Christie Todd Whitman for her work to protect the environment and Condolezza Rice for her strategic thinking, diplomacy and intellect.

I can't imagine what it must be like for a conservative woman with political aspirations. I suspect it's a very lonely venture. Attacked from the left for her political views, undermined from the right for not putting her family first, and generally underestimated for being a woman. Until this thought, "She's really smart for a woman," is no longer considered by some as a compliment, I doubt the numbers on either side of the aisle will change much.

Michelle Obama's Mom-In-Chief Image Is a Cave to Politics and Stereotypes

The REASON you have less Republican women in Congress is because merely finding women who can carry the GOP message and yet have enough humanity and personality to get elected is a difficult challenge.

"Hey, I believe in tax cuts for the wealthy, health insurance for the wealthy, judges for the wealthy, and less government to protect citizens from bogus banks, insurance and credit card companies." Carry that message and see how many other women will vote for you.

My mother was the first woman elected to a constitutional office in Nevada and my grandmother was the fist women elected to a federal office in Nevada. Both are pro-life Republican women who managed to balance work, family and pretty impressive political careers (and, yes, I know I'm biased).

My view of women's issues is not the same as theirs, but I've found (maybe because I do live in the West) that Republican women believe in looking at candidates based on their merits.

One of the important aspects of the Republican philosophy is the idea of individual responsibility, which fits it with the idea of voting for the best candidate.

I think Mary Kate Cary may be 100% right that the GOP will lose a huge percentage of women if it rejects moderates. But really, how many women get to play "homemaker" any more? In this economy - that's a function of education, financial situation and philosophy, right?
