Obama, Congress Should End Horse Slaughter

In all fairness slaughter is the worst way to go about the unwanted horses as it is horrific. If you can't find another home or sanctuary for your horse, you should consider having a vet, not a kill buyer euthanize your horse. Its about the same cost as a months care for your horse, but at least you know it was taken care of right. As the owner you are responsible for your horses and what happens to them. Auctioning them off and letting them go to slaughter houses means hours and days of travel with no food water or any care and they could die on the way to mexico or canada. Then they have to deal with the terrifying stresses of being prodded and stabbed on their way to die, only to be hung upside down and having their throats slit open while they are still alive. Or they could go peacefully and painlessly by injection. It's your choice.

What people don't understand is that horse slaughter is the most humane act that can be done. With economic struggles more and more people are not feeding their horses with justifications such as "the field is green" or "Mustangs run free and forage," but just because a field is green does not mean its edible. Slaughter is better than starving to death. And for those who say just sell it, no one wants them anymore. It cost too much. And if you do succeed in selling it, you better not leave your trailer unlocked at the auction or you just might it full of horses others have discarded. That is the reality of the situation.

Cruelty should never be a means to an end. Whether that be to human or animal. That being said, in this day and age of recycling, conservation and future food shortages why would want to stop the procreation of meat? Horse meat is actually very delicious, tender and extremely lean. Not to mention they are fun to ride. But isn't that the real root of the problem? Weeat certain animals and not others because they are not cute? Seems a bit skewed, but not to far off from human nature. Where we promote and fawn over the 'beautiful' and discard and delete the 'ugly.'

Chickens, cows, pigs were made to be slaughtered for us to eat. Horses were bred to do so much more. If it werent for horses the world would be nowhere. Horses carried us everywhere pulled wagons etc. They deserve to stay alive and not be slaughter for the chinks to eat.

Your just trying to make us pay more taxes to save a horse, Its ok to slaughter cows and chickens for you to eat but what gives you the right to force other people to live the way you want to live? If someone liked cat meat...just because I dont doesnt give me the right to say they cant...right? The only people that need to be controled are these animal activists! Quit trying to control and force everyone to be like you....get a real life, hopefully out of america! People like you have made america not a free country anymore, our freedom has been removed a long time ago, so quit saying america is a free country....thats only good for these illegal immagrants!

What is the underlying issue of the article and the comments which follow? While there will be disagreement about this, I think the fundamental concern should be the prevention of pain, regardless of which animal in involved. Perhaps humans have a greater understanding of pain than other mammals, and suffer more as a result, but we can only speculate on this. Also, it's natural for us to feel more compassion with certain animals than others when pain is involved, but this is only because we consider certain animals as pets, or as friends, in the case of horses. It stands to reason that if we can feel compassionate toward the pain of pets and horses, then we should be able to go a step farther and feel some empathy with the pain we cause to other animals.

I appreciate this article and the comments made. Even if there is disagreement, this is so much better than simply ignoring the issue.

Hi Ryan, I want to thank you for reading the above article and responding. You asked; "do these people think before they speak or type?"

Many of us have been actively involved in exhaustive efforts to save horses from slaughter for what seems a lifetime...myself, for 7-8yrs. Others much longer. It's not a matter of what is more important-this is not about abortion vs. horse slaughter. Many activists have dual roles Ryan..many work equally hard for different causes. Your comment indicates passion for change; to protect those unable to speak for themselves..not unlike us.

Kindest Regards, S. Murphy, Prescott Arizona

Absolutely amazing the rationalization of some minds. The horses are being slaughtered so we must save them immediately. Yet, millions of unborn babies are slaughtered every year, but that's okay??? Do these people actually think before they speak or type?

Ryan of TX 4:10PM August 01, 2009

Ummm, so what about cows and pigs and chickens? Should we egulate and prevent the breeders from producing more of them than there are caring owners?

I'm not saying that animals should be mistreated, but this article is going a bit beyond that scope.
