its amazing, i was so excited when pres. elect obama won then i started reading the comments of the articles and its is such a downer some of the comments that are made.

i swore off reading any more comments and only sticking to the articles. i decided to read these comments and have come to the conclusion people just can't be satisified and the majority don't have a clue about what they are talking about.

Calm down. Our president-elect is smarter than all of you. Especially you, Ms. Erbé. Preferentially placing women in high-level positions simply to even the gender ratio would be a cynical, purely political move (have you already forgotten Sarah Palin?). Obama is about getting things done in the most practical way, not appeasing the often small-minded and ignorant people who helped elect him (see also: every blogger angry about Lieberman). That's what Bush did, remember?!

Yes, and there are women qualified to have every single Cabinet post up there, so the idea that Obama would be appointing women just because they are women is ludicrous---(besides he was just elected because he is African-American, why not?) Yes, Obama has been less than positive to women--moreover the Democratic Party in its blatantly sexist attacks on Sarah Palin at least needs to make a positive statement about women in their own fold. One or two women Cabinet members just isn't going to cut it. And enough with the Clinton Retreads--I thought this was about Change!

So leave Senator Clinton in the Senate and bring up some of the other 100,000 Democratic (or Republican) Women who have worked their butts off for their fields. What about Senators Olympia Snowe or Susan Collins from Maine--both are known for their ability to work in a bipartisan way to promote motion within the Congress. Here's his chance to show how bipartisan he is!

Hey! I've got a great idea! Let's appoint this person over here just so we can appease this gender/religious/ethnic group even though they aren't nearly as qualified as several other people. Last time I checked this country was in great shape...

I agree with the above poster: you are Bonnie the bean counter. Thank heavens that a new generation of progressives has taken the mantle from you and your bean-counting ways. You've done nicely in setting the progressive mantle back a generation or so with your bean-counting ways, but finally you can do no more damage.

And by the way, JUST WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH YOUR HATRED OF OBAMA? Get over it already.

I'm not sure how you can claim his cabinet needs more women when we had known of oh... 3 nominations, one of which is potentially a woman? Case in point, a few hours after this inane commentary, 2 women were given cabinet jobs. Happy now? You think he did it cause they were women or cause they were qualified?

aldebaran of CA 12:10PM November 20, 2008

Now that Obama has three or four women in line for the Cabinet, I hope you finally quit carping on the man and cut him some slack!

Erbe, you are the worst type of liberal: the bean counter type. He'll appoint some women and he'll appoint the best people for the positions that are open. I know that you are perpetually stuck back in 1975, but I really think it's okay to move beyond quota land. Geez.

"Washington Post's Al Kamen headlined "Let's Talk About Sex" (I think the writer meant "gender")"

I think you should look up the definition of gender, and learn to differentiate it with sex. Sex is a biological term. Gender is a sociocultural term. None of the women that are potential candidates for spots on Obama's Cabinet would fit under our culture's (outdated) gender role assigned to women.
