The Left's Limited Outrage at Hitler Comparisons

that is because the right is typically associated with fascism so the comparison of hitler and nazis to the right is reasonable.

fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread

domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives.

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion.

9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Such a silly controversy, with people pretending they didn't get it, just so they could be offended. Hank wasn't comparing BHO to Hitler in the sense that they are both murdering maniacs, but rather, he was saying those golfers were on opposite sides of the equation. There's a huge difference, and you silly folks, please stop pretending it's more than it is, get a life, and move on.

Is this for real? Jeannine Garafolo and David Clennen? Seriously?

Uhhh . . . .

So this is how it works, right? ESPN takes Hank Williams Jr. off the air because of a bizarre interview in which he compared Obama to Hitler, and then you pull out two rather obscure comparisons to Hitler by liberals over the last 8 years and call liberals hypocrites?

a) I had not even HEARD the Hank Williams Jr. quote until AFTER ESPN made its decision. That was ESPN making a decision, not "liberals."

b) I've never even HEARD of David Clennen, and Jeannine Garafalo is hardly the spokes-woman for the Democratic Party. And if either of them had done what they had done and also sung the theme song to Monday Night Football, they, too, would have been pulled off the air.

c) the Tony Bennett anecdote above has nothing to do with Hitler or George W. Bush. It is a non-sequitor. It does not belong in this post.

d) I don't speak for all liberals, but I personally was against Hitler comparisons when we had a Republican in office, and I am against them now. Frankly, I wish that we could all agreed that nothing any American politician has done (since the Indians were annihilated and slavery ended) or will ever do (foreseeably, anyway) will ever be comparable to what Hitler did.

e) Mel Brooks wasn't comparing anyone to Hitler. That was a satire.

f) If I were less of a person, I would lace you with profanity, because this style of rhetoric is infuriating, whichever side it comes from. Profanity and insults are, despite my gutteral response to your post, obviously inappropriate in a civilized society, so I will leave it: this is very disappointing.

Seems to me...

Once we get all that Democrat scum out of our White House, we can return to the road of prosperity and confidence in our country again. I've never seen our beloved country so divided, and it is all because of that ill-elected POS CEO!

Gawd, I can't wait for Election '12!!!!

@David of CA

Get off the Obama koolaid and your irrational, emotionally-driven, issues about Bush. Hollywood lives in its own little bubble about truthlessness, indignity, and inaction. Nothing that someone from Hollywood says has a shred of substance. Furthermore, there is not one intelligent thing that you can say that's right about this country in the hands of the current president. Case closed.

1. “started two major wars”

Is how like Hitler ? UN supported, Congress supported, and joined by many Counties.

2.“he supported torture”

And barry isn't ? Congress was informed

3.“imprisoned people without trial”

And not barry ? Or does he JUST KILL ?

4. “he also spied on innocent Americans.”

Which obama continued Bush battle in courts and court ruled legal.

5.“Obama passed healthcare legislation”

Against polls. Gave us Nov. 2, 2010.

___

I personally would not compare either to Hitler...

Bill Hedges of MO 12:28AM October 07, 2011

Hey David. Obama just executed an American citizen without any due process.

Lou of CA 11:05PM October 06, 2011

George Bush started two major wars, he supported torture, he imprisoned people without trial, he allowed the CIA to rendition innocent people, he also spied on innocent Americans.

Obama passed healthcare legislation.

Obviously comparing Bush to Hitler is more justified that comparing Obama.

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS MUST LEAD TO ATROPHY OF THE LIBERAL BRAIN

Mr. Williams wanted to express his distaste for Obama’s “golf summit” with Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner. And here’s what Williams actually said: “It would be like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu, okay?”

That's it... It's called an analogy. No different than saying, "It would be like the Road Runner playing golf with Wiley E. Coyote." No one is calling either party anything!

Further, in the aforementioned analogy how does one tell who is supposed to Hitler?

Now, for your edification, here's an example of an insulting remark - not an analogy. Calling members of the Tea Party, "tea baggers"... You see, that is not an analogy. That is a distasteful, pornographic slur - which I observe, is used hundreds of times a day by members of the liberal elite. Are you listening Bill Maher?

Some come on, all you puckered up, smug, snotty lefties - pull your collective heads out of your taco shell and take a whiff of fresh air - it's not good to constantly re-breath the fumes from your own b.s. - pretty soon the vapors start making you think goofy stuff.... like you're brilliant, witty or insightful.

Now see, that's an insult....A well deserved insult. If you keep shootin' your mouths off you'd better get used to 'em.

Smaller government and less debt has little to do with the Bible. Has everything to do with conservatives. I look forward to vote on obama's job bill. See how many Democrats support obama.

You wish to discuss the Bible and not the issues. Issues KILL YOU...
