The NFL is about to find that out the hard way. The impetus for the change was an especially violent weekend in football. Rutgers’s player Eric LeGrand was paralyzed from the neck down after a vicious hit on a kickoff return. Several NFL players, including Eagles star wide receiver DeSean Jackson, were injured after bone-rattling hits.

Those two words came to define the economic stimulus package. Everywhere he spoke, President Obama mentioned the "shovel-ready" projects that would get people to work and get this economy back on track right away. But as he admitted in a recent New York Times interview, "there is no such thing as shovel-ready projects." It was a small metaphor of an emerging campaign theme—change takes time.

No ghosts, goblins, or zombies here. I'm talking about the political scare tactics—taking away grandma's Medicare, gambling away our retirement in the stock market, and slashing education spending. These electoral memes are the zombies that never die, but they are killing our chance to fix our long-term fiscal problems.
