This, in large part, explains Democrats’ messaging strategy over the past year. By and large their legislation has been unpopular when viewed as a whole, but zoom in on specific provisions and people’s opinions may change. The strategy, which first found a modicum of success in the healthcare debate, is now being contemplated in a final attempt to sell the stimulus before the midterm elections. It won’t work.

The path he laid in The Audacity of Hope and paved on the campaign trail has fallen into disrepair, in need of its own stimulus refurbishment. He, like so many past politicians, suffers from the all-encompassing desire to win. People didn’t vote for that. People wanted change. They are increasingly left disappointed.

Liberal economists, including those in the Obama administration, criticized Germany’s choice to eschew the notion of a big-spending Keynesian model in favor of austerity measures. They argued that governments must spend, spend, and spend some more to mutually reinforce the economic growth needed to dig the world out of the crisis. If we keep digging deeper surely we’ll dig to other side of this problem, right?
