Obama Mustn't Give Away the Store in Debt Ceiling Deal
Tweet Share on Facebook July 8, 2011 Comment (21)Sometime in the next month, the president and congressional Republicans will cut a budget deal. I don’t expect anything from the GOP but I do hope President Obama doesn’t give away the store in an effort to get Congress to raise the federal debt ceiling.

'All Men Created Equal' Means Constitutional Protection for Gay Marriage
Tweet Share on Facebook July 5, 2011 Comment (37)When you celebrated the Fourth of July yesterday, you recognized the right of gays and lesbians to get married like any other American.
The Fourth celebrates the ratification of the Declaration of Independence, which contains these words. "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal." Those words did not free the slaves, but they started a movement toward equal rights for all Americans.

Would a President Palin Quit Halfway Through Term?
Tweet Share on Facebook June 30, 2011 Comment (37)Inquiring minds want to know the answers to these questions.
The former half-term governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, quit her bus tour halfway through the trip. If she becomes president, would she be the only president besides Richard Nixon to resign midterm? If she can’t finish her tour, how can we expect her to finish her term? Let’s hope we never find out. And we won’t if the national polls are any indication.

Obama Must Make Libya Case to Congress, American People
Tweet Share on Facebook June 22, 2011 Comment (3)The reaction to President Obama's forthcoming speech on Afghanistan is proof that our Founding Fathers knew something very important more than 200 years ago that the current commander in chief is learning now: It’s a lot harder to stop a war than it is to start one.
When the Founders wrote the Constitution in 1787, they had just finished a gruesome war for freedom, in which patriots had to fight and kill their brothers, the Tories, and their cousins, the British. The Revolutionary War ended officially in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris, but British troops still occupied U.S. territory in the Midwest and encouraged Indian raids on American settlers on the frontier.

Mitt Romney, Herman Cain Can't Fill George Washington's Shoes
Tweet Share on Facebook June 20, 2011 Comment (15)I want to wish George Washington, the father of our country, a belated happy Father’s Day. Washington had his faults. He, like five of our first seven presidents, was a slave owner. But he had several redeeming qualities that are sadly lacking in this year's GOP presidential candidates. A couple of months ago, Herman Cain, one of the Republican candidates and darling of the Tea Party, said he would not be comfortable with Muslims in his cabinet. One of the great things about our first president was his religious tolerance. Early in the big guy’s presidency, a Jewish congregation in Newport, R.I., sent the first president a letter. The congregation indicated the Founders' focus on Christianity made them wonder if they had a place in the new republic. Washington wrote back that he didn’t care whether people were Jewish or Muslim or how they worshipped as long as they worshipped God.

2012 Republican Candidates Forget About Jobs
Tweet Share on Facebook June 16, 2011 Comment (16)U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York recently said there were two mandates from the 2010 midterm elections, but lawmakers only talk about one, which is to reduce the deficit. An examination of the data from the media’s exit survey proves his point. Four of 10 (40 percent) voters indicated that Congress’s first priority was to reduce the federal deficit. But almost as many (37) voters wanted Congress to spend money to create new jobs. Only a few brave souls dare to speak the truth, which is that federal spending is the investment that corporate America won’t make. At least in the United States.

A New Reality Show for Sarah Palin and Fox
Tweet Share on Facebook June 9, 2011 Comment (21)I have a great idea for a new show on Fox. It would be a reality comedy show with Sarah Palin as the host. It’s what Hollywood calls “high concept.” The idea would be that all the Republican presidential candidates would travel across America in Sarah's RV. Hilarity follows.
Late night comic Jimmy Fallon put it best: “Obama was in Ireland. He thought about buying a four-leaf clover for good luck, and then he looked at the field of Republican candidates and decided it wasn’t necessary.”

Bush Tax Cuts Turn 10: Wall Street Celebrates, Americans Suffer
Tweet Share on Facebook June 7, 2011 Comment (13)Break out the bubbly, because there will be celebrations today on Wall Street and in corporate boardrooms and mansions all across America. Why? Because today is the 10th anniversary of the big Bush tax breaks for bankers and billionaires and the businesses that bankroll their big-budget campaigns.

Is the Tea Party Killing the Republican Party?
Tweet Share on Facebook June 2, 2011 Comment (18)Conservatives are between a rock and a hard place. The Tea Party is in and the GOP is out. Tea Party is a brand that is popular with conservative voters but doesn’t have a national financial base. The Republican Party has a national finance infrastructure but it has been obliterated ideologically by the Tea Party. The emergence of the Tea Party keeps Karl Rove and other D.C. Republicans awake at night. But I’m not losing any sleep because of Karl Rove’s nightmares.
