How Republicans Won the Tax Cut Message War

The lame duck Congress is about to become a dead duck and unfortunately, the tax cut deal is about to become a done deal with Senate passage yesterday and House passage imminent. So there’s not much point now in arguing the merits of the bill. But as we head into a new year, there’s plenty of time to discuss how congressional Republicans were able box the president in a corner and force him to accept a deal that he admitted he didn’t like.

Wearing my academic hat, I remind my students in college government courses of the axiom that “the power of the presidency is the power to persuade.” The real power of the president is his ability to command the attention of the national media in a way no other American can with the possible exception of Lady Gaga. [See photos of the Obamas behind the scenes.]

As a Democratic political strategist and pollster, my specialty is message development. And as a message strategist, I can’t for the life of me figure out why the president has not been able to use the power and visibility of his office to frame the debate over economic and tax policy. House GOP Leader John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have far less access to the media than President Obama but they have set the terms of public debate over national fiscal policy.

Why have congressional Republicans succeeded where the president has failed? The best answer I can come up with is Capitol Hill conservatives have been much more aggressive communicating a clear and consistent story to the American public.

The irony of this situation is that the same Obama team that has failed so badly at message development and discipline in the White House is the same team that kicked everyone’s butts in message during the 2008 presidential campaign. Change, change, change has become compromise, compromise, compromise. [See a roundup of this month's best political cartoons.]

The disappointments of this this year and the advent of a new year should remind Team Obama of another political axiom. Dance with the one who brung you.

It is as simple as this........it wasn't the Republican message per se, but I'm going to get more money message. The problem, many don't understand the long term consequences of the continued borrowing of our government. Based on the posts that I've read at the USN&WR site, the conservative republican who may or may not have struggled at some point in their life has no sympathy for those who have fallen on hard times because it will never happen to them or at least not again. The liberal democrat doesn't know when to say enough is enough, you've taken advantage of the system far to long.

I wouldn't care if the highest tax rate was 5% if we (our government) paid its bills. BALANCE THE BUDGET...START PAYING DOWN THE DEFICIT... I've got grandchildren I'm concerned about!

The problem is the PPS (PANDERING PIECES of SHIT) on both sides of the aisle are destroying this country with the deficit spending. To the morons of both parties, at our current rate of deficit spending it will not be long before the Dollar is no longer recognized by the world. You damn well better have plenty of canned foods stockpiled. WAKE UP!

The Senate finally got it keister moving with passage of the tax bill and DADT. Lets get to the real job, Simpson-Bowles, the deficit and the debt, and jobs, jobs, jobs, as well as the START Treaty.

Why is US News Today 100% dedicated to the dribble of leftists?

There are no tax cuts being proposed and the argument was always in the news from the leftist point of view. The bill should have been described for what it was, a bill to avoid tax increases (from their current levels). Raising taxes at this point, when the recovery is still week, would have been foolish. The Democrats understand economics. Usually they are trying to destroy our economy (job market, specifically) so as to make more of the population dependent on an ever growing government. This is just the path to socialism, then communism that they have been on since the 1910's. But, the snakes that didn't get voted out last time want to survive 2012, so voted for the bill. They are patient and understand that the populous will eventually give them what the want, total submission.

By the way, who's running the show over here? The magazine had moved left and stayed there, but US News Today vs the Weekly is like Pravda and the New York Times.

It's pathetic.
