The Six Words That Will Clinch Mitt Romney the GOP Nomination

December 20, 2011 RSS Feed Print

Here we go, less than three weeks left until the Iowa caucuses and former Gov. Mitt Romney is once again back on top of the GOP field. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, the latest flavor of the month, or a few weeks in his case, is reeling, and Romney is within the margin of error of the lead both nationally and in Iowa.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, Gov. Rick Perry, Herman Cain, and Newt Gingrich all experienced very fast rises and meteoric falls.

Romney's consistency in the polls is a sign of the voters' long-term, durable familiarity and comfort with him, his background, and, most importantly, his policies. Those policies can be summarized in six little words: Small Government, Low Taxes, National Security.

Mr. Romney's 59-point plan artfully combines Small Government and Low Tax policies as a way to push the economy to some real recovery. On National Security, Governor  Romney has deftly called for a Reagan-style safety through strength policy.

Many pundits believe that because other candidates have been able to catch fire in the polls from time to time, while Mitt has stayed slow and steady in the mid-20 percent range, is a sign of extreme weakness of his candidacy. That's wrong.

GOP voters had fleeting interests in many of the other candidates, but as soon as the voters got to know them better, that interest fell like a rock. Why? Bachmann's obsession with social issues, Perry's inept debating outside of his praise for God himself (I mean Tim Tebow of course), and Cain's personal issues not being able to be explained by the number nine. Then there's Newt's "non lobbying" on behalf of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, which are about as liked by the GOP faithful as the Yankees in Boston or LeBron in Cleveland.

The six little words are right in Mitt's wheelhouse. That wheelhouse gives Mitt the ability to appeal to everyone in the big Republican tent. While other candidates are going up and down like little fishing boats in a stormy sea, Governor Romney is the cruise liner set to come into port as the winner of the GOP presidential nomination.

THE SIX WORDS I WANT TO HEAR...

President Paul uses the veto pen.

That's the primary way a just and limited federal gov't would be brought about, via the presidential veto pen.

With the constant -- and exercised -- threat of a presidential veto, Congress would soon be limited to constitutionally-sound bills that secure close to a 2/3rds majority in advance.

And with less-contentious stuff coming out of Congress, skipping through on a narrow vote along party lines, there would be less agitation for subsequent judicial activism on the part of lefty/right federal and Supreme Court judges.

To David of MI, and others:

I used to think that USN&WR should get a whole new batch of opinion bloggers. Upon further thought though, I congratulate Mort Zuckerman and USN&WR for assembling in one place such a team of blatant lefty/right shills.

It's an over-the-top form of aversion therapy.

The longer opinion-team USN&WR shill for either Romney or Obama the sicker more-reasonable people will become of the two company-store choices. And begin to see Paul as the middle ground for 2012. Not in terms of being a 'compromise' between Romney and Obama, but by being the means to tell war-is-peace and spend junkies on both republican and democrat sides to take a long walk off a short pier while the rest of us move on to something much better via a Paul presidency.

"While other candidates are going up and down like little fishing boats in a stormy sea, Governor Romney is the cruise liner set to come into port as the winner of the GOP presidential nomination. "

Are you blind? Ron Paul has NOT been going up and down. He has steadily increased. Your article is a blatant lie, misleading, misinformed and has nothing but malcontent written all over it.

You sir/madam should be banned from ever writing another article ANYWHERE.

If denial of the obvious is a character defect then Boris I have bad news for you... you are beyond repair.

Perhaps you should call a doctor (I know of a very very popular one in Iowa).
