The CIA does not spend the 700 Billion we tax payers are giving, congress does. Politics have been the mainstay for government appointees every since the Johnson years. I think the appointment of a bureaucrat to a international agency is a must. Lets wait and see who is appointed to the NSA and HLS agencies before we panic over this one.

Perhaps no one has noticed, but CIA Director became a political position some time ago. One of the Directors went on to become President. Making a political appointment to a political position is a surprise now?

Only problem with Leon Panetta is that President elect went over the heads to two powerful Senators. He is an excellent choice. I will mention one reason that has been missed by everyone else. Monterey CA ran the best human resource outfit that is now most lacking in Intellegence, Language skills, and Leon Panetta was their backer in Congress for years. http://www.monterey.org/langcap/ He has alot of friends.
