Social Security

My husband was at the ss office today and the woman that worked there told him that both of us cannot collect ss when we become of the age to do so. She told him it is the higher of the two that is taken into consideration and we would have to split it! I was under the impression that I can collect ss under my own rights since I have worked 30 plus years. It makes no sense that he cannot collect ss under his own rights and me under mine. Can you please confirm?
