The demise of a bad idea

I failed to note this on Friday, but last Thursday the Senate declined to vote cloture and thus killed the Hawaiian Native sovereignty bill sponsored by Sen. Daniel Akaka. The vote was 56-41.

Lead roles in killing the bill were taken by Sens. Jon Kyl, Bill Frist, John Cornyn, and Lamar Alexander. I have written about this issue before.

The Hawaiian Native sovereignty bill appears to have majority support in the Senate and the House, but the cloture vote means it will not come to the floor in the Senate. Akaka has opposition in the Democratic primary this fall from Second District Rep. Ed Case, who supports the bill but presumably would not push for it as Senator Akaka has.
