“High name recognition and ample funds,” call out an enthusiastic chorus of students. “A strong reason for running can help,” a few add. “But, absent the other components how would they establish their ‘brand’?” they ask.
For more than a month it appeared as if Donald Trump would add a fourth component to the list: unmitigated gall, seasoned with proper amounts of vulgarity and ghoulishness. But not so fast. To paraphrase how another member of a club we will call “the rich, the famous, and the fallen,” featured in this space last week, might put it, “times could be a changin.”

For those of us who grew up in the 1960s, Bob Dylan provided voice to a generation that set out to change the world, and, in some respects, did. The power of his lyrics and his melodies, repetitious and easy to remember, are what made him famous and ultimately rich.

(The reference is to a popular game show of the 1950s in which contestants were asked to solve problems within an assigned time limit.) As both parties, each in control of one House of Congress, seek to assemble a budget that their base constituencies can live with, the clock continues to tick with shutdown a likely outcome.
