Tweet Share on Facebook February 23, 2012 Comment (15)Last night may be the last primary debate for quite a while. The Democrats are weeping. The Republican insiders are breathing a huge sigh of relief.

Rick Santorum Scores Humorous Hit On Romney With New 'Rombo' Ad
Tweet Share on Facebook February 15, 2012 Comment (5)Former Sen. Rick Santorum's campaign and admaker John Brabender scored big time with the new ad parodying former Gov. Mitt Romney as a Rambo figure who fires mud at a cardboard cutout of Santorum. The spot has started airing in Michigan and the campaign plans to air it in other upcoming primary states as well.

Why Mitt Romney Can't Sell Himself to Conservatives
Tweet Share on Facebook February 14, 2012 Comment (8)Most successful candidates for president get their sea legs as the campaign moves along; good politicians learn and get better as they go back and forth across the country, as they compete in the myriad of contests. They learn from their mistakes, they test out their stump speeches, they improve in debates and informal question and answer sessions, they grow as candidates. Unfortunately for the Republican Party, this is not the case for former Gov. Mitt Romney. If you examine Presidents John Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, even George W. Bush, they all got into a rhythm as candidates and office holders.

Lawmakers Didn't Always Use Earmarks for Personal Gain
Tweet Share on Facebook February 8, 2012 Comment (1)I have a confession.
I have been wanting to write this column for a long time. Not because I want to be sanctimonious, not because I want to harken back to "the good old days," not because I want to glorify an old boss.

Has Mitt Romney's Hit Job on Newt Gingrich Gone Too Far?
Tweet Share on Facebook January 30, 2012 Comment (10)After South Carolina, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's campaign decided it was time to change their strategy toward former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. It was time to take him out, similar to what they did in Iowa. Take no prisoners, forget Obama for the moment, and direct their fire at Gingrich. Smart strategy? Of course. The only strategy, really, since back-to-back victories in South Carolina and Florida would have been devastating to Romney, certainly in the short term.

What U.S. Politicians Can Learn from Egypt
Tweet Share on Facebook January 19, 2012 Comment (7)I just returned from a week in Cairo working with the political parties at a training seminar at the University of Cairo. I was joined by four colleagues who also teach at George Washington's Graduate School of Political Management and who do political consulting work here in the states and around the world. We worked with about 80 leaders and a dozen of the political parties in Egypt.

Rick Santorum's Perfect Iowa Timing
Tweet Share on Facebook January 3, 2012 Comment (5)We will surely know more Tuesday night, but is former Sen. Rick Santorum's recent surge just one more "flavor of the month," and is this really all locked up for former Gov. Mitt Romney?

John Boehner Is Letting the Inmates Run the Asylum
Tweet Share on Facebook December 20, 2011 Comment (30)Things are going from bad to worse for Speaker Boehner and the House Republicans.
It hasn't exactly been smooth sailing for the speaker over the last two years since all his Tea Party freshmen hit town. The good news for him was that he was elected speaker; the bad news was who elected him!

Pretending I Am a Republican
Tweet Share on Facebook December 16, 2011 Comment (10)OK, I thought it would be fun to pretend that I am a Republican. Cut me some slack here. I know what some of you are thinking…this is some mean trick.

Newt Gingrich? Mitt Romney? Ron Paul? GOP Race Won't End Quickly
Tweet Share on Facebook December 10, 2011 Comment (55)Remember 2008, when the Democratic primary process got very sticky after Hillary Clinton won New Hampshire and the momentum shifted? Or way back in 1980 when Ted Kennedy began to gain some steam after early defeats? Or even 1976 when Ronald Reagan challenged Gerald Ford on the Republican side and late entrants like Frank Church and Jerry Brown and Mo Udall began to chip away at Jimmy Carter on the Democratic side?
