Blame Republicans for the Debt Ceiling Crisis

Actually, Bill you need to check all of the quoted material you have put in your comment. Just for the heck of it, I also checked your quote about the Reagan tax cuts. That quote, too, comes not from U.S. news and world report, or from the Heritage Foundation, but from the book: Commercial Real Estate Restructuring Revolution: Strategies, Stranche Warfare, by Stephen B. Meister. The quote is found on page 172 of his book. As I have mentioned numerous times, primary information will serve you better when you are writing on a topic. Since I only checked two of your citations, I would suggest you check all of them. Their origins of all your "quotes" are now at question.

This part is not difficult. 1. Select a specific quote from the article; 2. "google" it; and, more often than not, 3. the original author of this article will appear immediately on your computer screen.

Here is an example of the technique of identifying plagiarism:

For instance, if I were to quote the phrase: "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known."

I could copy that quote, place it in the "Google" box, and i will see, immediately, that it is a quote by Charles Dickens from the book: A Tale of Two Cities (not Heritage Foundation or U.S. News and World Report).

Try using this technique on any statement if you want to know if it is an actual quote from a particular person. You will learn that many use other authors' words and claim those words as their own--this is plagiarism, and against the law.

Bill Hedges of MO:

Are you aware that your your quote, allegedly from the Heritage Foundation and used by you in u.s. news and world report, are, in fact, directly quoted from the book: Debt Deficits and the Demise of the American Economy, by Peter Tanous and Jeff Cox.

By quoting a source that is not documented as coming from the the original author(s), you are plagiarizing this information. Before you continue to quote additional information that does not come from the source you credit, check on the rules of plagiarizing. You can quote from another who uses this quote, but you must cite both the primary and the secondary sources at the end of the quote or placed in your Bibliography. There are serious consequences for crediting the wrong sources.

“The tax cuts of the 1920s” gave us the Great Depression. No thanks. Americans who lived through the Great Depression are dieing off with the collective memory of how Republicans screwed Americans then, with just about the same talking points Republicans are trying to screw Americans now.

“The Kennedy tax cuts” cut all the loopholes of the wealthy, raised the effective tax rate, and got conservatives like Barry Goldwater all fired up jumped on the John Bircher Society bandwagon (which what is still attacking us for taxing the rich.)

“The Reagan tax cuts” started us our current deficit, but Reagan raised taxes 11 times when it became clear the country was in a recession, which is what we need to do.

“Harmful Spending & Complexity” is what Republicans are defending, harmful spending like the extravagant tax loopholes for the rich and corporations. Its those who can afford to lobby endlessly to keep the corrupt tax system in place where average Americans pay the bulk of taxes while the rich and corporations pay none at all or often get negative tax benefits like GE or Exxon (corporate welfare).

These lame Heritage Foundation lies are what is corrupting our political system. Obvious Bill gets paid to post the same snarky cut-and-paste backwash at least once a day here, but these lies don't represent real people as much as conservative advocacy hacks yet they show how deeply corrupted our politics are. Its obvious conservatives have to pay snarks to get their disinformation points out there with regular frequency and to stir up the blind hate from what people don't understand the 'complexity' of big issues. We know Bill is not going anywhere he's getting paid to abuse this blog, but we know him by his frequent lies. Lieing too often over and over has the opposite effect, at least for Americans who think for themselves. Maybe this trash works in Germany, bill - It doesn't work here, sorry to burst your Joe Goebbels' bubble.

“According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the Bush tax cuts actually shifted the total tax burden farther toward the rich so that in 2000-2004, total income tax paid by the top 40% of income-earners grew by 4.6% to 99.1% of the total.”

__ tax cuts for rich paid for theslves plus tax cut for non-rich too...

___

“The tax cuts of the 1920s”

Tax rates were slashed dramatically during the 1920s, dropping from over 70 percent to less than 25 percent. What happened? Personal income tax revenues increased substantially during the 1920s, despite the reduction in rates. Revenues rose from $719 million in 1921 to $1164 million in 1928, an increase of more than 61 percent."

_____

“The Kennedy tax cuts”

President Hoover dramatically increased tax rates in the 1930s and President Roosevelt compounded the damage by pushing marginal tax rates to more than 90 percent. Recognizing that high tax rates were hindering the economy, President Kennedy proposed across-the-board tax rate reductions that reduced the top tax rate from more than 90 percent down to 70 percent. What happened? Tax revenues climbed from $94 billion in 1961 to $153 billion in 1968, an increase of 62 percent (33 percent after adjusting for inflation)."

_____

“The Reagan tax cuts”

“Thanks to "bracket creep," the inflation of the 1970s pushed millions of taxpayers into higher tax brackets even though their inflation-adjusted incomes were not rising. To help offset this tax increase and also to improve incentives to work, save, and invest, President Reagan proposed sweeping tax rate reductions during the 1980s. What happened? Total tax revenues climbed by 99.4 percent during the 1980s, and the results are even more impressive when looking at what happened to personal income tax revenues. Once the economy received an unambiguous tax cut in January 1983, income tax revenues climbed dramatically, increasing by more than 54 percent by 1989 (28 percent after adjusting for inflation)."

_____

“Harmful Spending & Complexity”

“Lower tax rates are important, but they are not the only critical issue. Both the level of government spending and where that money goes are very important. And even when looking only at tax policy, tax rates are just one piece of the puzzle. If certain types of income are subject to multiple layers of tax, as occurs in the current system, that problem cannot be solved by low rates. Similarly, a tax system with needless levels of complexity will impose heavy costs on the productive sector of the economy.”

We had 2 wars going on and gave large tax cuts with a republican congress. Can you tell me how you did the math to say at that time we would not be in a deficit? If those tax cuts were suppose to help the economy, were are the jobs? Why is the republicans are now so obsessed with the debt, when they were giving tax cuts at the time supporting 2 wars? Since the republicans have taken over governorships and congress what have we gotten? NRA pandering gun laws, Anti abortion anti gay marriage laws pro business anti union laws, and the tea party. We voted for you because of the jobs. Tell me how are these measures suppose to create jobs? Where are the jobs? And no I am not a huffington msnbc fan.

"How Harry Reid caused the debt-ceiling debacle"

" Here’s Reid on December 8, 2010":

"Reid also said that he would like to push off raising the debt ceiling until next year — when Republicans control the House, but that he has not discussed the matter yet with his caucus."

“Let the Republicans have some buy-in on the debt. They’re going to have a majority in the House,” said Reid. “I don’t think it should be when we have a heavily Democratic Senate, heavily Democratic House and a Democratic president.”

"This has to rank very highly in the annals of tactical own-goals. As Ezra explains":

"The election was over. Nancy Pelosi was still speaker of the House. Harry Reid still had 59 Democrats in the Senate. The Bush tax cuts were expiring. And Democrats had a perfectly popular and intuitive position: Extend the cuts for the middle class but, in a time of deficits and sacrifice, sunset the cuts for the rich."

"Republicans, of course, didn’t want to allow the Bush tax cuts for the rich to expire. They were, in fact, desperate to preserve them. Which meant Democrats had the leverage"

We already do. The GOP has have already rattled markets enough to crash any recovery - what they've been planning all along, but they want it all - to plunge the country into another great depression, taking down the world economy, too.

Republicans are following through with Bin Ladin's plan right on target to cripple the US economy. Worse that its an inside job like no foreign terrorist could ever hope to do. These treasonous acts of the teabaggers and their Republican fifth column collaborators will come back to bite them and will not be forgotten.

Peter, can you do nothing but parrot Obama's marching orders? I'm kinda sad - thought you had more character than that.
