Some provided job training or skills-based learning, and online courses were in their infancy. They made money but didn’t make waves.
No one paid too much attention to accrediting these schools or to what was or was not happening to the students.

I learned the Longfellow poem, “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere,” by the third grade. Every April 19th was a holiday, and we had the re-enactment of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, complete with Redcoats and the Minutemen on the Green by our First Parish Church. A big parade was held, and Paul Revere and William Dawes came riding through town on their horses.

The ideological straight jacket does just what you would expect--it constricts movement. Everything is nice and neat and tight but not conducive to serious efforts to move forward. Politicians such as Scott Walker, who put themselves in ideological straight jackets, either live to regret it or are thrown out on their ear, or both.
