Americans Right to Celebrate Osama bin Laden’s Death

Osama bin Laden was unarmed. Don’t care.

Women were, or were not, used as human shields and died as a result. Again, don’t care.

His burial wasn’t “really” in the Muslim tradition. Not sure it would be possible to care less. Pretty sure what I would have done would have been far less civilized.

Finally, Americans celebrating in streets was a bad thing. [See photos of reactions to Osama bin Laden's death.]

Really?  Somehow we should feel bad because we may have offended some for rejoicing at his death? Give me a break!

This man is responsible for mass murder of the worst kind. There are children without parents, parents without children. A skyline is forever changed. Grandmothers are getting patted down and newborns are out of luck when it comes to breast milk if it’s not coming directly from the source. The world will never go back to how it was on September 10, 2001. All of these changes are because of him. His death won’t change things back, but celebrating his demise is something all Americans--heck everyone around the world--should be allowed to do with impunity. [See a transcript of Obama's speech on bin Laden death.]

The beauty of the demonstrations was in their diversity. On television there were images of all kinds of people rejoicing spontaneously at the death of a man who has caused so much pain. All colors, genders, religions, political ideologies and my guess is sexual orientations, took to the streets on Sunday. What’s more American than that?  And when was the last time we saw such unity for the purposes of jubilation?

Unlike the anti-American demonstrations often seen on television overseas, these were not directed at a group of people or an ideology. These demonstrations came from the heart. To those who thought they were inappropriate, that’s your problem, not ours. Anything short of a celebration minimizes the sacrifices of our military and the risks taken by those brave Navy SEALs, plain and simple. [See a slide show of six potential terrorist targets.]

Is America still at risk? Absolutely. Everyone must remain vigilant. But nearly 10 years later, thousands of lives lost either on the day or in subsequent wars, with an economy remaining firmly in the toilet, America certainly earned this celebration. After nearly 3,400 days and nights since that awful September morning, taking to the streets for a few hours in jubilation was our God-given right. It’s exactly the reason bin Laden hated us in the first place. What better way to mark his death.

There might be more to the bin Laden story than most accounts reveal. Take a look at http://www.binladenslastdays.com

we did deserve to celebrate if for no other reason than to remind the denizens of the middle east that we remember their celebrations in the streets on 11 sept. 01. and yes, a pat on the back for the seals and the members of 160th; but don't forget all the other spec ops men: special forces, force recon, and af sar.

but for you limp noodles out there we have to stoop to their level. i don't understand how you people can ignore the fact that in their culture to show mercy is to show weakness. to not return tit for tat is to show weakness.

americans can not seem to get it through their thick heads that the sanctity of life is not a rule of life from the mideast to the far east.

we cannot police the rest of the world and we should not try to force our culture and way of life on them either. it's one more reason most of the second and third world hates us.

oh, and one more thing; our rights under our constitution and its various amendments belong to american citizens (legal) only. no where will you find anything that says they belong to the rest of the world!

We don't celebrate the killing -- no one wants to see the brutal death of any other person. However, we all want to see Justice done. We celebrate the action of our heroic SEALS. We celebrate the President's courageous and momentous leadership in that moment. Most of all, we celebrate Justice being done. This man was responsible for the deaths of millions --estimates range from 2 million to 5 million people worldwide. We should also celebrate the care given to the corpse of bin Laden on behalf of Muslims and people of all faiths. Because: If We're not better than Them, then They're not wrong.
