Bob Woodward and David Maraniss: A Tale of Two Obamas
Tweet Share on Facebook September 25, 2012 CommentIt's a nice little rivalry in our town on the Potomac between bestselling authors David Maraniss and Bob Woodward. Both are associate editors at The Washington Post. Both work with the legendary book editor Alice Mayhew at Simon & Schuster. They both gave talks under the same tent at the National Book Festival Sunday, the day of the autumnal equinox in an election season. In a shared sense we were all in the tempest together, people shared umbrellas and joked about moving into each other's neighborhoods. That's what I like about you, Democrats.

How to Stand Up to the Republican War on Women
Tweet Share on Facebook August 27, 2012 CommentPicture Alice Paul marching through the watery streets of Tampa, not one to let a tempest or a stampede of elephants slow her down. The greatest suffragette of all, Paul would employ the same strategies against the bedraggled Republican Party convention and the "War on Women" as she did against President Woodrow Wilson. It took years before the rigid Wilson surrendered to the political tide of "Votes for Women." But he was no match for her brilliance in finding ways to upstage him. She was the architect of the first social change movement, historian Jean H. Baker wrote, to directly challenge a president.

New Book Defends Barack Obama's Stimulus
Tweet Share on Facebook August 21, 2012 CommentMichael Grunwald's fascinating new book, The New New Deal, is bound to be a lasting word on Barack Obama's presidency. It closely examines the early stimulus spending bill and argues that it, well, pretty much saved us from a free-falling depression. What we got instead, a Great Recession with endemic joblessness, was something to be grateful for. Sort of. That was never a message the American people were going to hear, much less love.
