How have America's attempts to reduce poverty compared to the efforts of other western nations?

This is one of the great eye-openers. America is the wealthiest nation in the world, yet it has higher levels of poverty than any other western democracy. Its poverty rates compare more with a country like Romania than with countries like Canada, France or Germany. It doesn't have to be that way. There are plenty of politicians out there thinking about anti-poverty strategies. There are plenty of intelligent academics, think tanks and so on. I think the conversation is shifting. I hope my book becomes a part of that conversation, but it's a work in progress. You've got to convince a lot of people at a lot of different parts of the political process that this is an issue worth investing time, energy and political capital in.
